China to curb some technology exports to U.S.

the measures suggest Beijing would retaliate over U.S. restrictions imposed on Shenzhen-based Huawei Technologies Co Ltd due to what Washington said were national security issues.

In a tweet, the pro-CCP paper’s editor-in-chief Hu Xijin said that China “is building a management mechanism to protect China’s key technologies.”

“This is a major step to improve its system and also a move to counter U.S. crackdown,” he added. “Once taking effect, some technology exports to the U.S. will be subject to the control.”

China Telecom Swallows Huge Amount of European Mobile Traffic For Over Two Hours

For more than two hours on Thursday, one of China’s largest internet providers forced a huge chunk of European mobile traffic to be rerouted through its own servers.

    in April 2010,
roughly 15 percent of the world’s internet traffic suddenly traversed through Chinese servers.

This included traffic flowing to and from U.S. government and military websites, including NASA. Commercial sites for companies such as Dell and Microsoft were similarly affected.

the duration of the episode is unusual, experts say, and such incidents can be malicious.

    fingered China Telecom’s behavior as

highly su ious, revealing that the company had seamlessly “hijacked the domestic US and cross-US traffic and redirected it to China over days, weeks, and months.”

“Two hours is a long time for a routing leak of this magnitude to stay in circulation, degrading global communications,”

a major data center in Switzerland, Safe Host, leaked more than 70,000 routes to China Telecom, which in turn announced the routes on the global internet, causing huge amounts of traffic destined for European networks to be rerouted through its own servers.

As trade war with U.S. grinds on, Chinese tourists stay away

A new battlefront has opened in the trade war between the United States and China:

the $1.6 trillion U.S. travel industry.

Industry professionals worry that the drop-off is picking up speed this year,

affecting not just airlines, hotels and restaurants,

but also retailers and attractions like amusement parks and casinos.

Combined with Stephen Miller's visa barrier of 5 years of social media posts and emails before a visa is granted,

and WHO THE is going to vet each of 100Ks of tourists' 5 years of info? and how long will it take?

Foreign tourism very probably will drop disastrously? to whose benefit?

The Trump negotiating plan is to demand capitulation, then to claim victory when the opposing side does whatever it was going to do anyway. Michael Hudson sketches out the main problem with this approach:

Catalyzing Asian and European trade independence, financial independence, food independence and IT independence from the threat of U.S. sanctions will leave the U.S. isolated in the emerging multilateralism.

U.S. chipmakers quietly lobby to ease Huawei ban

Qualcomm and Intel, are quietly pressing the U.S. government to ease its ban on sales to the Chinese tech giant

Intel and Xilinx Inc attended a meeting in late May with the Commerce Department to discuss a response to Huawei’s placement on the black list,

“This isn’t about helping Huawei. It’s about preventing harm to American companies,”

Out of $70 billion that Huawei spent buying components in 2018, some $11 billion went to U.S. firms including Qualcomm, Intel and Micron Technology Inc.

Google, which sells hardware, software and technical services to Huawei, has also advocated so it can keep selling to the company

“They’re doing it by their own desire because, for many of them, Huawei is one of their major customers,” he said, adding that chipmakers knew that cutting Huawei off could have “catastrophic” consequences for them.

the ban has had real repercussions.

Broadcom, which has not been lobbying the Commerce Department, sent a shockwave through the global chipmaking industry when it forecast that

the U.S.-China trade tensions and the Huawei ban would knock $2 billion off its sales this year.

Apple, Keurig Dr Pepper, Dollar Tree press U.S. to drop China tariff plan

their opposition to a Trump administration plan for more U.S. tariffs on Chinese goods, including iPhones, Macbooks, and single-serve coffee brewers.

The new round of tariffs would reduce Apple’s compe iveness and

reduce the contribution it could make to the U.S. Treasury,
    BIG tax avoider, evader!!

Apple said in an online filing on Thursday.

Air conditioner maker Carrier Inc, a unit of United Technologies, said the latest round of tariffs on air conditioner parts “will result in significant price increases for U.S. consumers of U.S.-manufactured HVAC equipment,”

The company said it would take 12 to 18 months to find alternative parts sources, and higher costs may force it to exit lower-priced segments of the air conditioning market.

Companies such as Dell Technologies Inc, HP Inc, and Walmart Inc have already voiced their opposition.

The tariffs could also hit Christmas sales hard, particularly cellphones, computers, toys and electronic gadgets.

U.S. Will Add AMD's China Joint Venture to En y List, Cut Access to U.S. Technology

Reports emerged today that the United States Department of Commerce will add AMD's THATIC Joint Venture to the en y list, saying Sugon,

which has an ownership stake in the venture through its subsidiaries,

is "acting contrary to the national security or foreign policy interests of the United States."

The action would cut off the joint venture's access to US technology, and

while the report does not specify a date for the action to go into effect,

it comes a week before President Trump's scheduled trade talks with China President Xi Jinping at the G20 summit as the two countries remain embroiled in a trade war.

The ruling also has an impact on Intel and Nvidia, as Sugon has developed 10 of China's 20 fastest supercomputers, and continues to develop more based on AMD, Nvidia, and Intel components.

Given the company's deep involvement in developing supercomputers for China, it could also put a large dent in the country's exascale ambitions.

How Trump tariffs are hurting U.S. consumers

Walmart is among the retailers who plan to raise prices because of the Trump administration's tariffs on Chinese-made goods.

There already have been a record number of bankruptcies for Midwest farmers.

Soybean futures have hit the lowest price levels in a decade.

Commodity prices for pork and cotton also are spiraling down.

consumers may be forced to pay higher prices for shoes and clothing at stores like Walmart and Target.

Walmart imports 26% of its products from China, while Target imports 34% of its merchandise from China.

prices for washing machines already are up 12% because of the tariffs.

When Trump regularly threatens to impose more tariffs on Chinese goods, raise existing tariffs, or impose tariffs on other countries, such as India and Mexico, U.S. businesses can’t plan on future manufacturing with any certainty, so they order fewer supplies.

Already, steel production is down, and plants are closing.

The total tariffs would mean that the average family could expect to pay $2,294 more annually for goods,

U.S. Steel is halting production at plants near Detroit and in Gary, Indiana.

According to a Washington Post story:

Despite initially surging under the tariffs, steel prices have fallen dramatically amid weakening demand from key consumers, including the auto industry, energy industry and agricultural industry, said Phil Gibbs, a steel industry analyst at KeyBanc Capital Markets. …

Trump’s steel tariffs are costing U.S. consumers and businesses more than $900,000 a year for every job created, according to a report by the Peterson Ins ute for International Economics, a think tank that supports free market policies.

    From Fortune:

Steel and aluminum tariffs have increased production costs for manufacturers, which translates into higher prices for consumers.

The Peterson Ins ute for International Economics found that tariffs last year increased the price of steel products by nearly 9%, pushing up costs for steel users by $5.6 billion.

    The outdoor recreation industry.

A new analysis from the Outdoor Industry Association estimates that current and potential tariffs could cost the companies that distribute and sell outdoor clothing and recreational equipment an estimated extra $1.5 billion in costs per month.

Retailers depend heavily on China in their supply chain. China accounted for about 41% of all apparel, 72% of all footwear, and 84% of all travel goods imported into the United States in 2017.

Executives of more than two dozen American companies have made it clear they will raise prices on consumer goods to protect their profit margins and stay compe ive. Citi estimates that a 25% tariff would increase inflation by more than three times what the estimated effect of the current tariffs are.

“The production of some items, like cashmere and silk garments, is virtually impossible to move out of China in part because of where the delicate materials come from,”

officials from the two countries have worked on this issue for more than a year—and failed.

    According to Yahoo Finance:

If they fail to reach an agreement, there’s a good chance Trump will follow through on his threat to place additional 25% tariffs on $300 billion worth of Chinese goods.

Trump demands withdrawal of India's 'unacceptable' tariff hike

U.S. President Donald Trump on Thursday demanded India withdraw retaliatory tariffs imposed by New Delhi this month,

calling the duties “unacceptable” in a stern message that signals trade ties between the two countries are fast deteriorating.

India slapped higher duties on 28 U.S. products after the United States withdrew tariff-free entry for certain Indian goods.

Washington is also upset with New Delhi’s plans

to restrict cross-border data flows and

impose stricter rules on e-commerce that hurt U.S. firms operating in India.

Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft Rail Against Trump's Console Tariffs

submitted a joint letter to the United States government expressing concerns over proposed tariffs that would impact manufacturing their game consoles in China.

    In
the letter, dated June 17 and addressed to Joseph Barloon at the Office of the United States Trade Representative (USTR),

the industry leaders explain how tariffs on video game consoles hurt consumers, developers, retailers, and manufacturers alike.

The USTR’s tariffs also “risk job losses in the industry,” and “stifle innovation.”

Trump appears to soften his tone on Huawei

US President Donald Trump has appeared to soften his tone on Chinese communications giant Huawei, suggesting that he would allow the company to once again purchase US technology.

Speaking at a press conference in Osaka, Saturday, Trump said that the US sells a "tremendous amount of product" to Huawei. "That's okay, we will keep selling that product," said Trump.

"The (US) companies were not exactly happy that they couldn't sell."

The US Commerce Department formally added Huawei to the list of companies the US government considers to be
    undermining US interest in May.

It effectively meant that companies would need to apply for a US export license to sell to Huawei, cutting off its primary supply chain.

    https://edition.cnn.com/politics/live-news/g20-june-2019-intl-hnk/h_6f86ba7a80e65af7ce7ab2984e5058c7

As is usual with corrupt politicians abusing tariffs, corrupt Trash/Repugs are now in position to shakedown the US exporters for (dark money, of course) campaign contributions before granting export licenses.

Trump Is Losing His Trade Wars

The pain is real, but the coercion isn’t.

Donald Trump’s declaration that “trade wars are good, and easy to win” will surely go down in the history books as a classic utterance — but not in a good way.

    Instead it will go alongside

Cheney’s prediction, on the eve of the Iraq war, that “we will, in fact, be
    welcomed as liberators.”

That is, it will be used to illustrate the arrogance and ignorance that so often drives crucial policy decisions.

Trump isn’t winning his trade wars.

True, his tariffs have hurt China and other foreign economies. But they’ve hurt America too; economists at the

New York Fed estimate that the average household will end up paying more than $1,000 a year in higher prices.

there’s no hint that the tariffs are achieving Trump’s presumed goal,

it’s only a “trade war” if the goal of the tariffs is coercion

imposing pain on other countries to force them to change their policies in our favor.

the pain is real, the coercion just isn’t happening.

why can’t Trump impose his economic will?

There are, I’d argue, three reasons.

First, belief that we can easily win trade wars reflects the same kind of solipsism that has so disastrously warped our Iran policy.

Second, Trump’s “tariff men” are living in the past, out of touch with the realities of the modern economy.

Finally, Trump’s trade war is unpopular — in fact, it polls remarkably poorly — and so is he.

leaves him politically vulnerable to foreign retaliation.

The light-truck tariffs America imposed in 1964 in an unsuccessful effort to force Europe to buy our frozen chickens are still in place, 55 years later.

Trump’s casual trashing of past trade agreements has

    badly damaged American credibility, and

weakened the international rule of law.

McKinley offered what sounds like a direct response to — and rejection of — Trumpism, declaring that

    “commercial wars are unprofitable,” and

calling for “good will and friendly trade relations.”

Why Trump Caved to China and Huawei

It is likely that Trump’s administration will withdraw its request that China extradite Meng Wanzhou.

In December, Trump said that if he thinks it is good for the United States, then he will intervene with the U.S. Justice Department to no longer pursue the extradition.

    This statement—made to Reuters—

suggests that Trump is not committed to using family pressure against Huawei.

It suggests that Trump now realizes that he can try to twist Ren Zhengfei’s arm as tightly as possible, but

that Huawei and China are unlikely to blink. They have the upper hand.

Wall Street banks bailing on troubled U.S. farm sector

JPMorgan grew its farm-loan portfolio by 76 percent, to $1.1 billion, between 2008 and 2015, according to year-end figures, as other Wall Street players piled into the sector.

Total U.S. farm debt is on track to rise to $427 billion this year,

up from an inflation-adjusted $317 billion a decade earlier and approaching levels seen in the 1980s farm crisis, according to the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

But now - after years of falling farm income and an intensifying U.S.-China trade war - JPMorgan and other Wall Street banks are heading for the exits,

according to a Reuters analysis of the farm-loan holdings they reported to the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC).

The agricultural loan portfolios of the nation’s top 30 banks fell by $3.9 billion, to $18.3 billion,

between their peak in December 2015 and March 2019, the analysis showed. That’s a 17.5% decline.
