There is this thing called a “cap hold”, genius: (Davis opting out would have been an advantage if he was on a rookie deal & was going to resign for a max ala 2015 Kawhi which opened up cap space for Softridge)
The general purpose of a cap hold is to prevent teams from using room under the cap to sign free agents before using Bird rights to re-sign their own free agents. If a team wants to take advantage of its cap space, it can renounce the rights to its free agents, eliminating those cap holds.

It will be interesting to see if there is one team that has the right combination of desperation, financial reserve, and expiring contracts to outdo our offer for CP0.
You farmers may not value our players (think Kwame for MVPau) but teams value our players expiring contracts. Several key players that helped us rang are on deals that expire after 2021 season. In this example, we trade them to OKC for CP0 and absorb his remaining 2yr/$85M contract.
OKC has obvious incentive to help the Lakers. Why? No fans in a small market city. How can they afford his salary during COVID-19? Even during the Lakers 7yr playoff drought they still made money hand over fist. The Lakers also have that $4Billion contract with Spectrum (biggest deal in NBA). So even without fans they can afford to field a team with 3 max players and 12 vet minimum players. Lakers would still be favorites although they are top heavy.
And they could swing other lesser deals using expiring deals as incentive for teams to cough up good players they can no longer afford.
So Dudz is right. Having expiring deals is just as good as having cap space IMO. The rich gets richer
LAL now has 2nd best coach in city by far but will it be enough to tip the tide?

Vogel is 3rd string plug and play coach who never played obvious lineups till LAL lost. LBJ is shadow coach as well.
Let's not short change Rondo. His ability to dissect film was key to Vogel's defensive schemes vs some premiere perimeter scorers like Dame, Harden, and Jamal Murray.
