I'd never call any of the presidents from those days heroes. They were wealthy and treated like kings. When you have that kind of power, it's not heroic to do something kind.
Well, if you read that book, you'd find his grit and principle admirable if not heroic.
I just use the term hero in a relative manner if nothing else.
