when i moved to the east coast, the firm i worked for back in LA offered to keep me on board remotely. i still took the VA bar, but i havent used it yet. still just practicing CA law. as far as our clients are concerned, its as though i never left. i still do all the same work i did, dealing with clients, drafting pleadings, moving papers, discovery, etc. only thing that changed is that i couldnt make physical court appearances (or take depositions)... but that was a concession the firm was willing to make.
even before covid, most california civil hearings could be done via courtcall, with some specific exceptions like trial of course. depositions have become much more commonly done via zoom which has also helped.
