Yeah no Pop.

Poeltl helps Bertans, who is extremely weak. Gasol is too slow to help.
That might be the case but eventually Poeltl is going to surpass Gasol in production/effort and will deserve to start. And Pau could probably be more productive going against 2nd rate centers instead of starting caliber ones.
He was getting his pushed in (on the glass) by Whiteside in the first half.

Just one game but I just saw a stream of this game and I'm really excited by this team's potential. Poetl's fouling is going to be annoying at times but he's a solid presence on the floor. Murray looks to have a true breakout year and at least be in the running for most improved player in the league. Dude has leadership, confidence, and Pop's trust. Derozan is going to be fine. I think he'll adapt to the system better than LMA did in his first season with the team. Gay still has enough left in the tank to be starting material but even though he feels he has his athleticism back, he is definitely past his prime. Nevertheless, he'll be even better than last year. We'll need Gasol's three ball at the 5 but he definitely needs to cede time to Poetl. The game's just too fast for him now to be a starter. I'm a little worried about the bench and I'm still skeptical of White (I think fans overrate him) but they looked ok out there. If Walker can get time over Forbes' sorry ass, they'll be even better. Overall, I think we'll surprise. You can tell Derozan will be a solid addition and make for a good one two punch with LMA. The biggest surprise will be Murray. I think he can be special and is my new favorite Spurs player. It was weird as though seeing this team without any of The Big 3 though.
Didnt know where to put this!?

Betetr than that- they were going under on his PnR's and he was shooting over the top and hitting.
Would love to see Murray hitting his jumpers. Couldnt watch the game and heard that Murray did good
His shot has very much improved and he purposefully hit over the top shots when they went under, just to show he could do it, more than once.
I was most pleased with Gay, Murray, Poeltl, and White. In that order. A bit disappointed with how bad Derozan's defense is. He constantly losing his man and is always flat footed.
Yeah... his D was a bit abysmal. I'm hoping Pop can start enforcing better habits that will help him.
He sinks too deep to one side and has to recover when it shouldn't have been an issue.
He's still got that Raptor stink right now.
He'll be a work-in-progress on that end. Probably on offense too, although that won't be as big a deal.
White might be better than Murray, tbh. I wonder if Pop ever plays them both, with White at the 2.
Wish Bruce would show up and work with him..
yup. I liked that. MIP candidate if he continues that well. Also we didn't see the one handed floater from 15 feet and such, instead he went to his jumpshot. Another thing, liked that drive he had in transition. He had about 2-3 minutes of play where he made several impressive plays.
I got to watch the first 3 quarters this afternoon and was pretty stoked by what I saw.
My thoughts in no particular order:
1. If Rudy Gay is able to knock down 3 balls like he did in the first half, it will more than adequately address my concerns about the 3 spot this season. His shooting the ball like that from 3 makes him very playable with DeRozan and LA for a potent offensive trio. Also, that dunk he attempted was insane. The fact he had the confidence in his physical abilities to even try that monster throw down tells me he is indeed feeling fully healthy again.
2. Poeltl passed the eye test. Big time. He was disruptive on the defensive end, runs the floor well, has good hands, has good footwork, knew how to get positioning, and was effective at tipping the ball out when he couln’t pull down the rebound. Having him as a 3rd big on the squad is quite a luxury.
3. DJM seems poised to take the step forward I was hoping he might this season. He still struggled to finish at the rim on a play or two, but his stroke and confidence shooting the ball seemed much improved. When those shots start to fall it is going to be sweet. He is hands down our best perimeter defender and boy are we going to need him.
4. D. White is going to be alright this season. He looked like he should be in the rotation without question.
5. I’m not sure I can say the same for Forbes. He struggled to get his shot off, he was constantly behind the play on the defensive end, and his body language when things didn’t go his way (often) was horrible. If he isn’t in the rotation maybe it opens up minutes for Walker, but I’d also be okay rolling with more minutes for DJM and DDR with Mills and White.
6. We all wondered how the SF spot was going to work out. It’s way to early to assume the SL is set, but if Pop stays with Gay as the starting 3 and Belli backs him up it makes as much sense as anything I guess. Especially if number 1 on this list sorts out.
7. Gasol actually looked okay to me tonight. He had an impressive block that reminded me of the ones Timmy used to get where he wouldn’t even jump as he stuffed somebody like a holiday turkey. Offensively there was a high low feed from Gasol to LA that just made me smile. Those guys are going to feast on that action in today’s small ball NBA. Gasol doesn’t have to play big minutes to be effective, which opens up Poeltl and Bertans to bring interesting and different skill sets to the rotation. Thrown in LA as the stud of the bunch and I really like our big rotation this year.
A couple of of things I thought were funny from the broadcast:
1. There was a graphic during one of the breaks that was led “gone but not forgotten”. It showed Manu, TP, Danny Green, and Leonard as Spurs who moved on. All I could think was poor Kyle. I’d rather remember him than Leonard...
2. I was in the kitchen cooking before the tip off and had the volume up so I could hear the TV in the den. I got really excited when I thought I heard Bill Land’s voice. Turns out it was a Miami broadcaster. That dude sounded so much like Bill Land that I couldn’t shake it the whole game. I kept waiting for an “oh mama!!” that never came...
Mine were Murray, Poltl, White and Bertans. Derozan looked like a bad roleplayer at times, but he's getting adjusted and isn't used to Pop's schemes so I am really not paying that much attention. He will figure it out with some time or be gone in the future if he disappoints.
Derrick White is one ugly mother er
come on dude!!!![]()
