we may have gotten a sign that Paul Manafort—or should we say, Pavel Manafort or Pasha Manafort—knows he isn’t getting a pardon from Trump. It turns out that he was a licensed attorney in his home state of Connecticut. That is, until Thursday, when he surrendered that license rather than face all-but-certain disbarment.

Combined with the fact that Manafort’s plea deal is effectively pardon proof,

Former Trump campaign chair and convicted felon Paul Manafort worked through unknown intermediaries
during the Trump transition phase to place people in the new administration, according to a new court filing Tuesday.
Rick Gates knew about Manafort's efforts to place people in the Trump administration, and
described the hiring scheme to special counsel Robert Mueller.
Manafort maintained contact with these “mystery” intermediaries into early 2018,
well past when he was originally indicted by Mueller in October 2017.
The special counsel sought another delay in Gates' sentencing,
noting that he "continues to cooperate with respect to several ongoing investigations."
