I confess to being of a mixed mind about it. I think removing the tangible legacy of a white man's government from the public square creates the illusion that white supremacy has been removed therefrom. It has not.

OTOH, I think it's legit for people to be pissed off about public monuments that represent the second-class status of African Americans and to ask they be removed.

Confederate monuments provide both teachable moments about our racist past, and nostalgia for white supremacy.

After a yearlong push to remove a controversial "Children of the Confederacy Creed" plaque from inside the Texas Capitol, momentum appears to be picking up steam.

On Monday Gov. Greg Abbott announced a Jan. 11 meeting of the State Preservation Board that oversees the Capitol grounds and the likely next Texas House Speaker said he supports removing the plaque, The Dallas Morning News first reported. The plaque, which was erected in 1959, asserts that the Civil War was “not a rebellion, nor was its underlying cause to sustain slavery."

Republican state Rep. Dennis Bonnen, who is expected to lead the lower chamber next year, applauded Abbott's efforts and voiced his support for removing the plaque.

"I commend the Governor for calling this meeting to begin the process of removing the confederate plaque from the halls of the State Capitol," the Angleton lawmaker said in a statement to The Texas Tribune. "It is historically inaccurate, and I stand by those who have called for its removal."

"public monuments that represent the second-class status of African Americans and to ask they be removed"

    "second-class" how bout sub-human slaves?

maybe this will make you feel less conflicted about that plaque maybe being removed:

SBOE to Stress Slavery as the Main Cause of the Civil War

... and continue to teach what supporters say was

the 'influence of Moses and Mosaic Law on the founding of the United States and the Declaration of Independence.

Will the TX textbooks also have TX's Jim Crow laws, and TX re-enslaving blacks under the US Constitution?

Fucking Christian Taliban, doing their part to indoctrinate kids and keep TX a bullshithole reeking of Christianized LIES.

I disagree that living African-Americans -- the folks to which I was referring -- are sub-human slaves.

Boutons is dead serious in labeling people/things/groups the way he perceives them and is a dead serious staunch racist. He has a deplorable term he calls black people that he thinks is cute. He refers to them as "nitters".

Despite the fact that my screen name is the only thing Hispanic about me, he has called me "Wetback", "beaner" and many unsavory names that Latino peoples would find demoralizing and insulting.

He's a truly awful person and comes off as completely unstable. There's zero hyperbole or cheekiness in his comment. In his heart of hearts, he's a disgusting racist. And a sick fuck.

You never know whether or not posters are genuine or mischievous alter egos, but I certainly agree Boutons comes off as a racist sometimes and as a crackpot very close to all the time.
