US citizens shouldn't be detained for lacking proof of citizenship.

US citizens have been detained by ICE for up to three years.

In the 1930s, up to a million US citizens were deported because they were brown.

    It could happen again.

    For those keeping score...

US Citizen detained = Fine, because he's not being deported

US Citizen being banned from Twitter = ABSOLUTE OUTRAGE

ICE has no reason to hold this guy. His family has already submitted bona fide proof of US birth.

    It's a message.

I wouldn't be surprised if ICE pitched the story to the DMN.

    Nope.

A US citizen is being lawlesssly detained by ICE.

The ostensible message ia that any brown US citizen can be deprived of his/her liberty and rights without due process of law.

If ICE/BP doesn't accept US Passports and US birth certificates as proof of citizenship, under the new guidelines for expedited removal, any American at all might be detained and deported.

For some reason though, these "mistakes" mainly seem to happen to "non-European" folks.

ICE's record of deporting US citizens prior to the broadening of expedited rules does not inspire great confidence:

ICE has been detaining and deporting U.S. citizens for decades,” said Jackie Stevens, a political science professor at Northwestern University. That policy came at a great cost to U.S. taxpayers in terms of litigation and compensation, she added.

U.S. citizens account for about 1% percent of those detained by ICE and about 0.5% of those deported, according to Stevens’ research.

Mr.Galicia was already in good shape. He was on the way to a soccer tryout when he was detained. Then he lost 26 pounds in 23 days in a filthy, overcrowded cell.

It'll take him awhile to get his muscle tone back.
