Doesn't read like it's a virus. Not sure "spreading" is the right word. Maybe in the same sense that food poisoning would be spreading, but I think that would instead be just more cases of it from whatever event/s. Then again, it could be a virus.
Still early and maybe there's a less than troubling explanation but the fact that it's spreading to caregivers is a little alarming.

My first thought was a prion, but the article went on to say that has been ruled out. Two years, 48 people, nothingburger.
When Covid19 successfully recombines with another betacoronavirus and causes a whole new pandemic we'll know about it pretty quick.
