I’ve heard there are actually whole clinics now dedicated to treating “gaming addiction.” I do think people who have a hard time distributing their time and energy in life might game lose perspective while gaming, but overall I think the whole thing is really overblown by the media. What do you think?

Take all electronics away from a teenager and tell me that they aren't addicted.

Anything used in excess can be addictive. Even if the "withdrawals" are not physically harmful like alcohol or other drugs, the addiction itself displays similar manifestations.

I think that your addiction to video games would be preferable to your kiddie porn addiction.

    No .

My niece is completely dependent on her iPads and games. It's gotten to the point where if she's away from her stuff she goes completely and utterly mad.

I have no idea how my sister let it get to that point. Perhaps its laziness on her part but now it's too late.

My kids will have it old school when I'm ready to commit to having them. They're not going to be getting iPads, phones or any of that at no age 2.

That's a different problem entirely IMO. She's using technology as a babysitter/pacifier, which can stunt a child's emotional devolopment. I don't think we fully understand yet the effect there will be on these kids that are all raised by youtube.

theres this clown i know below age 18, in highschool...he only goes to school once a month or fortnight if he feels like it, he spends all day/night playing games..his parents are at their wits with him dealing with his gaming addiction, they say his depress or some , they want me to talk to him, im like fck that u lay ur bed, u go lay in it mate, if u fail at life then u fail at life...

they turn the wifi off, he goes and punch holes into walls..whether its his bedroom or his moms bedroom... they want me to be a handyman to fix those holes, im like fck that i aint working for free and dont have time to deal with their family bull ..., im surprise that clown even pass year 8 last year after spending like 90% of the curriculum at home playing games...

Simple solution there - go to school, get a job, or get the out of my house. You start getting physical with me, or destroying my property, cops will be called to remove you.

Your sister is letting screens raise her daughter. It's absolutely laziness. If she is given free reign w/ internet connected devices, that's even scarier.

Yep. This is it in a nuts . It's laziness by the parents. And it's going to get even worse as young parents today are addicted to their own screens. I actually saw a young couple in a restaurant with their 3 year old having a mild argument about who had to let the kid use their phone to pacify it. Btw...the dad was the one to sacrifice his phone.

There is research being done in this area: https://www.cbsnews.com/news/groundb...ds-60-minutes/

Wow. Got a family member on his first parenting rodeo, and his 3 year old is a spoiled little . Dude cries and whines over everything until he gets his way and to make sure it's easiest on them (his parents) they rush to put a ing device with Baby Shark or whatever playing in front of him to avoid correcting the ty whiny behavior itself. His child is also behind on his speech compared to other 3 year olds and just stopped using diapers seriously like 3 weeks ago. Lazy parenting like this will really set him up for failure when he's ready to get his feet into the real world.. and they're gonna wonder why he is 29 years old and still living w/ them mooching off all their money..

kids were raised to be spoiled brats long before tablets and electronics, so i wouldnt blame that on electronics. that being said, they are a much easier path to lazy parenting...

    Pretty much nailed it.

They're both drones at this point. It's truly sickening to see.

I could understand the kid because that's pretty much what they do, you give them something and they will play/spend their time with whatever you give them. But there is no excuse for a parent to act like the person they are supposed to take care of in the first place.

The upside is that my sister doesn't drive so there is no threat of getting into a fatal accident. I'm actually amazed she's able to hold a job.

The price of becoming a parent is that you become responsible and have to put up with their until they're 18.

It used to be that sending your unruly child to camp or military school would set them straight but these days when you do that, all you're doing in ensuring they become so angry all they think about is shooting up places when they get out.

Truth.. I limit my kids time on video games and TV.. I keep all the apps on my Fire Stick locked under a password so I always know when they're on the TV.. my oldest doesn't have a phone like all his friends do, and when he gets one I'm going to buy him an old man flip phone that only gets text and calls so we can keep in contact when he's walking home only. I don't deal w/ ty ass at udes over electronics because they know Tuesday and Saturday are the only two days they can have screen time.. To get an idea of how strict I am w/ this , my 11 year old son has yet to be allowed to play Fortnite

Phones are just too ing addicting these days, and it's not like it was when I was growing up and NES and Genesis were the hot new toys.. Back then I would HAPPILY choose to go outside and ride bikes or play with Super Soakers and over being inside like zombies 24/7, calling CPS because their parent cut off their internet access

Parents do not have to put up with physical violence in their own home regardless of who it comes from. And the school truancy itself may be enough to get the kid into the juvenile system as long as the parents were not at fault (though obviously this behavior comes from years of enabling with no discipline).

Parents such as these wouldn't want to deal with the legal hassle though. It's easier to give Tommy what he wants and hope the problem solves itself. He'll be a financial and emotional drain on them until they die.

Out of curiosity, why do you say “these days?” Did kids react differently to military school in the past than they do now? Do you think that reflects a change in the way that kids think and react these days, or a change in the way that military schools work?

I would also think that military school would work great for some kids and terribly for others. Everyone has different learning styles and psychological needs.

I hate when parents put something on their phone or iPad for there kids at a restaurant, and the volume is all the way up with no regard for the other guests eating there.

But what about the volume of the alternative? A lot of inconsiderate dumski people don't realize they should take their screaming kid outside or ask them to quiet down for the sake of others. I can understand the sound of a kids Youtube songs being a nuisance when you're eating at a fine dining spot and paying top dollar for experience though for sure

Sure, one is “less” annoying than the other. But They’re both still problems. Teach your kids to behave.
