People who were paying attention already knew that Trump's attempt to add a citizenship question to the Census was a racist attempt to rig future elections. Now we have written proof.

Court do ents filed last Thursday showed definitively what most of us already knew: This plot was concocted to help rig future elections for, to quote the architect of the plan, "Republicans and Non-Hispanic Whites."

Is you takin' notes on a criminal in' conspiracy?

Here's how this all happened. This old white guy, Thomas Hofeller, came up with the idea to ask about citizenship status during next year's Census. Then he put together a study outlining how it could be used to hurt Democrats, help Republicans, and disenfranchise immigrant and non-white communities. He also came up with a bunch of arguments the Trump regime could use in court to defend the question. He passed all of this along to the assholes currently occupying the executive branch of our government, who moved to add the question to the Census. In Hofeller's words, adding a citizenship question to the Census "would be advantageous to Republicans and Non-Hispanic Whites," "would clearly be a disadvantage for the Democrats," and would "provoke a high degree of resistance from Democrats and the major minority groups in the nation." Hofeller was also helpful enough to provide an analysis of how Republicans could use the Census to decrease representation of racial minorities and increase representation of white, non-Hispanic Republicans.

Short story, a GOP gerrymandering consultant suggested the question as a way to improve the GOP's prospects after reapportionment, Sec'y Ross inserted the question and lied about why he did it in sworn testimony. Now Barr is circling the wagons to prevent any more damaging information from coming out.

Republicans will rue the precedent they're setting, supposing that Ross and Barr get away unscathed. Cabinet officers ignoring subpeonas and lying under oath until not too long ago, was considered impeachable at the very least.

But why is the question bad and especially favoring one political party?

The question may or may not be bad per se, the point is more that Sec'y Ross lied under oath about it. For whatever reason he thought it better to peddle bull in court than admit the question was crafted to give the GOP an edge. The judge in the case opined that Ross broke "several" laws apart from the lying.

In normal times, this would be a career killer, in Trumplandia public exposure of official corruption merely signifies a day ending in "y".

Can you think of any reason why Ross preferred lying to telling the truth in this instance? If it were normatively acceptable to establish policy to favor the party in power, why didn't Ross just say so?

It's a legitimate question. How does inserting the question on the census actually change anything? Be specific.

Forget this "gerrymandering specialist" nobody ever heard of....how does the question change anything? Specifically, how could it be weaponized?

He also did not follow procedures for doing it.

You don't see how discouraging people from being counted will affect reapportionment?

The US Census is a head count by design.

Asking people will depress the count in areas with a lot of immigrants, like Texas, NM, Arizona and California. The undercount may very well cause them to lose political representation in DC. The person who devised the question did it for this reason Sec'y Ross did too and lied about it in court.

That's not my opinion, court records establish it to a legal certainty.

This is what I referred to earlier when I said the judge thought he broke several (administrative) laws.

Participation in the US Census is voluntary. If you're suggesting you can't understand why immigrants of any legal status might be wary of participating in a census conducted by an administration that demonizes immigrants and has deliberately harsh policies wrt immigrants, you're either very naive or very dense.
