“The Norwegian Nobel Committee has decided that the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 is to be awarded to President Barack Obama for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and cooperation between peoples. The Committee has attached special importance to Obama’s vision of and work for a world without nuclear weapons.”

“Obama has as President created a new climate in international politics. Multilateral diplomacy has regained a central position, with emphasis on the role that the United Nations and other international ins utions can play. Dialogue and negotiations are preferred as instruments for resolving even the most difficult international conflicts. The vision of a world free from nuclear arms has powerfully stimulated disarmament and arms control negotiations. Thanks to Obama’s initiative, the United States is now playing a more constructive role in meeting the great climatic challenges the world is confronting. Democracy and human rights are to be strengthened.”

“Only very rarely has a person to the same extent as Obama captured the world’s attention and given its people hope for a better future. His diplomacy is founded in the concept that those who are to lead the world must do so on the basis of values and at udes that are shared by the majority of the world’s population,” the citation said.

“For 108 years, the Norwegian Nobel Committee has sought to stimulate precisely that international policy and those at udes for which Obama is now the world’s leading spokesman. The Committee endorses Obama’s appeal that “Now is the time for all of us to take our share of responsibility for a global response to global challenges.”

U.S. President Barack Obama has won the Nobel Peace Prize for 2009 "for his extraordinary efforts to strengthen international diplomacy and co-operation between people," says the Norwegian Nobel Committee.
I can't imagine winning the Nobel in physics for trying to find the Higgs boson. I can't see someone winning the Fields Medal for making an attempt at proving the Riemann hypothesis without having something to show for it. This selection is baffling to say the least, but then again the award doesn't mean after they gave it to Arafat.

All I can say is...WOW. I'm at a loss. This on the eve of another troop increase in Afghanistan.

In no way am I trying to be partisan here, but dude doesn't deserve it...At all.

Apparently he was nominated 2 weeks into the presidency. WTF?

Fun fact: Ghandi never won the peace prize. He was nominated for 11 straight years, but was assassinated before the Nobel organization decided to finally give it to him.

I think it's safe to say the Nobel organization is a joke, at least when it comes to the peace prize.

Remember, Carter won the peace prize for, in part...making sure North Korea didn't get nukes.

Gore won some Nobel and I think Clinton won one as well...something to do with advocating young women in the workplace.

Should it surpise, or piss people off?

I don't think so. It's like getting mad at a SNL skit.

No, Clinton did not win one. Obama is the fourth. Teddy Roosevelt, Woodrow Wilson, Carter, and now Obama have won them for Peace.

Carter winning one is laughable as well. The Nobe committee said this about awarding it to Jimmy: "(for) untiring effort to find peaceful solutions to international conflicts, to advance democracy and human rights, and to promote economic and social development."

You're definitely right that nobody should be surprised though.

An american president receiving the Noble Peace Price is like rewarding a drug dealer for fighting against addictions.

Aren't you the one who always insists you're not an Obama lover, despite evidence to the contrary?

I'm glad you thought it important to chime in on this one.
