Their rightful place should be on a football field in a playoff system. Same with UT and Va Tech.
USC back in their rightful place at #1

Nail on the head....
Yeah I agree with you, I am just saying that USC is the obvious number one team until someone beats them.
All this fretting about whether USC or Texas is "#1" is silly.
The entire system to determine the "national championship" in college football is illegitimate and always has been. Last year Auburn was the one that got screwed. Teams have gotten screwed by the BCS system year after year.
Before the BCS, teams got screwed by the polls. Media bias and sloppy voting patterns robbed team after team. Remember how that Penn State team with Kerry Collins and Ki-Jana Carter got robbed because Indiana scored a couple of late garbage-time touchdowns against them?
Back in the 1980's, there was a team -- Georgia, I think -- that was #1 going into its bowl, and won the bowl 9-7. Pollsters decided that because they didn't score a touchdown in their bowl victory, they shouldn't be #1.
Back in the 1960's and 1970's, when Woody Hayes was at Ohio State, they could roll 8-0 through the Big Ten schedule and win the national championship without playing any non-conference games. Meanwhile, LSU could go undefeated through the SEC, and beat two other powerhouses in non-conference, and get ignored.
The "national championship" always has been a pile of horse dependent more upon media bias and backroom deals between good ol' boys than actual football. And this year it's no different. USC and Texas are "pre-ordained" to play. The hype machine manufactures a controversy because Texas comes about ahead by an infintesimal margin right after beating a computer-friendly Texas Tech team by five touchdowns.
As long as the "national championship" consists of human beings or computers shutting out teams with legitimate chances to win it all, it's a pile of crap. Figure skating and gymnastics are sports more so than the "BCS le game." It's just a glorified exhibition game where the willing sheeple buy into the hype.
Division I-A college football has conference championships. That's it. There is no national championship.
Amen.As long as the "national championship" consists of human beings or computers shutting out teams with legitimate chances to win it all, it's a pile of crap.
Big whoop. So long as UT remains #2 at the end of the season, they'll play for the national le.
edit: it's not as though USC will get home-field advantage for being #1 in the BCS
no but they will get it because of where the game is played...the Rose Bowl.edit: it's not as though USC will get home-field advantage for being #1 in the BCS
mere coincidence
Right now #1 USC has a #5 UCLA team on their schedule and that's after playing #23 Cal and #24 Fresno State.
#2 Texas? No ranked opponents on their schedule save for the Big 12 le game where they could face a #22 Colorado or an unranked Mizzou.
How about undefeated #3 Va Tech? #6 Miami next Saturday and potentially a #9 Florida State in the ACC le game.
What about undefeated #4 Crimson Tide? #6 LSU and #17 Auburn plus whoever in the SEC le game.
And undefeated #5 UCLA? #1 USC at the end of the regular season.
Texas better hope that none of the other undefeateds gain some momentum and knock them out of the top 2. There's just as strong of a case to be made for the Hokies and Tide as there is for the Horns. That loss by Ohio State to Penn State could come back to haunt Texas.
how many points would VA Tech have to make up to overtake the #2 spot? Actually, that's a moot point as they are going to lose to MIAMI.
Check 2004 BCS
Both Va Tech and Alabama will have the opportunity to beat some highly ranked opponents before the end of the regular season. Right now Texas has an early season win over an Ohio State team with 2 losses and a win over an overrated Texas Tech team to hang its hat on. That's it.
Tech was overrated but all the computer saw was their #7 BCS ranking so they weigh that accordingly even though the reality is that they pumped up their wins and rankings on the carcasses of Div. 1-AA foes.
Yet another reason why a playoff is needed in 1-A College football.
Still #2 in the computers.
Computers are smrt.
