Bull that McConnell didn’t whip votes for this. I didn’t expect a conviction but Portman voting to acquit isn’t a vote of conscience.
near term, he still wants to be the party leader, right?

It's gonna be fun watching republicans lose elections for years.
Crazy how they don't realize that.

Democrats are such pussies that they would vote in spades to remove their own. They did it to a much lesser extent to Franken and Katie Hill.

And as a result, they lost the latter seat to a republican. ing losers.

This was completely expected after the early vote Paul forced...

What dems need to do next is to disqualify him from ever holding office again on Art 14(3) grounds, a simple majority vote. Then watch the GOP all over the Cons ution once they're Congressional majority again.

I thought you needed to convict first. Othewise they would have skipped to this step knowing republicans were never going to convict ever.

Also, wouldn't it then need to be passed under reconciliation? Why blow a once a year trigger on Trump? They need it to pass COVID relief.

I don't know that you do. And why would they need reconciliation for this? You can only filibuster for so long, and they have plenty of time plus the senate majority.

and frankly, if that's the excuse to blow up the filibuster, this is certainly something relatively popular to do so.

you couldn’t use reconciliation on that, violates the Byrd rules.

You’re right either way though, you need a conviction. Interesting part that I don’t know though, could you use a normal criminal conviction to bring a 14(3) disqualification to a vote? That could be the path to go down, and I think they’d get 60 votes needed for that. They already have 57.

he basically recapitulated the House managers case, agreeing with it, but denying the Senate has jurisdiction.

Trump couldn't be tried a few weeks because he was still the president; now he can't be impeached because he is no longer in office.

so yeah, he wants to have it both ways, despite losing a vote when that decision was made.
