i haven't built a PC in ages but the other day i went over to a friend's pad to show them how to build a computer and to my shock the specs their build would have was astounding. i haven't researched PC parts in forever either and seeing my friends motherboard being able to support 64gb of ram was wild as i plopped 48gb of ram into that motherboard. the computer itself was running an i7-6600 i believe & 48gb ram. i don't know what gpu my buddy is getting because that's the last piece of the puzzle for her. i showed her exactly what to do, as if it's hard to plop that pci-e gpu in anyhow, when she receives that gpu in the mail.

i ended up later that night going on pc parts picker and did a fantasy build of my own with a motherboard that handles 128gb of ram plus a badass gpu and an i9-9900 cpu. was a good down payment on a new vehicle to say the least.

i might start saving up and building me a new PC here soon enough.

anyone here have a crazy NASA computer or what?

Waste of money on RAM bigger than 16 GB in most all cases.. Get 16 GB 3200 Mhz RAM and a faster processor w/ the savings. I'm running a 9600k rn and it boosted the out of my game's FPS

The main reason top of the line is so expensive nowadays is that people don't actually buy it, and so it's not produced as massively as most of the middle of the line products.

The i9s are beast processors (I know, I have two), but it's really hard to justify for 95% of people out there.

It's actually difficult to justify even mid-range latest tech unless your mobo/cpu burned out and you have to rebuild.

A Haswell i5, 16GB of RAM, SSD, Pascal card is still extremely compe ive and these are all 3+ years old items (some 5+ years old).

GPU are super expensive this gen, mostly because Nvidia held a monopoly on everything above lower midrange gaming cards until a couple of months ago. Then AMD saw people were willing to pay $500 for the performance class that was $250 five years ago so just came $50 under Nvidia for a ing tiny 250mm^2 RX 5700XT (it has since dropped another $50 for $400). Now that card is twice as fast as the RX 480 it's replacing, but also twice as expensive as that RX 480 was at launch three years ago. Sucks not getting any price to performance increase in a new generation when price to performance increases used to be huge in new gens. Until Nvidia's Turing a year ago.

On the plus side cpus are ing killer for the price right now, especially the new Ryzen chips. Ryzen 5 3600 for $200 is ing amazing. And then SSD have gotten affordable too. Getting a high quality 1TB NVME SSD for $100 is pretty sweet today. SSD is finally cheap enough that mechanical hard drives may be a waste unless you want to store a ton of data/movies/porn/etc. And you have a ton of great case options these days. Plus with M2 SSD and no need for mechanical drives it's pretty reasonable to build a strong gaming system in a small mini ITX sized case.

thanks everyone for contributing to this thread thus far. love reading yalls replies especially el nono's. i have been out of the loop in regard to computer parts etc for a long time now so it's good to read about what new tech is out there and what works well without breaking the bank.

My last 3 builds have been mid-range/budget, two just over $1k and one $700 build. No need to go high end these days, the price/performance sweet spot is much lower down the chain. So I've got a total of under $3k in the past 10 years or so. Of course that doesn't include my Oculus Rift.

    $70 total.

Man, I'm not sure there is such a thing as price to performance this gen of gpus. RX 5700 XT offers twice the performance of RX 480, but it costs $400 three years after RX 480 launched at $200. No real price to performance improvement. What a garbage gen for graphics cards. Especially considering they'll probably age just as badly as HD 7950 and GTX 680 did (since they were heavy hitters the year before the last new console gen). Don't even have a gpu in my system right now (RIP my 970) but I can't stomach the thought of overpaying for the crap we see right now knowing I'll probably want to replace it in two years even if I buy a $400 to $500 card.
