dont believe the hype. sure chile is a great economy in south america but this is mainly using the same fake economic indices that the US uses. GDP, stock market, blah blah blah

the true story is that Chile was a powder keg that just blew. cost of life for average chilean has gone through the roof while salaries have been stuck. inequality has skyrocketed. pensions are a joke. healthcare is lacking and education is extremely expensive.

that plus the response of the police and armed forces have been shocking to agerage chileans. it is evident chile has not changed its army, police or secret police since the years of Pinochett dictatorship.

they have basically put some lipstick on the pig all these years. now it all blew up
this is pretty accurate. search function is disabled, i had written a post about chile a few months back that talked about the inequality and how it was fracturing society- now it finally cracked.

as far as haters posts, they're pretty wrong. I cant stand Piñera or his ministers, many of whom have a connection to the pinochet regime, but reality is that Piñera is not a far right dictator. On the contrary, he is one of the few right wing politicians who has (mostly) condemned pinochet and the regime. These protests are not about THIS government trying to abuse their powers, but rather the feeling of corruption, injustice, and impunity for the economic and political elite, which is mostly right wing but not entirely. A lot of sell out socialist governments are responsible for never fully reforming the pinochet cons ution and further privatizing the country. What can be attributed to this government, was a series of terrible communication fails: the treasury sec. saying people shouldnt worry about the metro price hike because the price of flowers went down, the economy minister saying people could save .04USD if they commuted 2 hours early, the president justifying not paying taxes on his house for 30 years as an oversight, etc. They also promised the world during the campaign and fell very very short of those promises. But Piñera is not a dictator, hes an egomaniac, he wants to be loved by everyone, which means basically that EVERYONE hates him. and that also played a large part in this phenomenon, because no one has jumped to his defense, not even the right. The military and police dont like him either because he already left them hanging in their corruption cases. This isnt a coup and NOT AT ALL comparable to 73, when people were having their hands cut off, women having rats shoved in their vaginas, electroshock torture, etc. Surely, calling a curfew and putting soldiers on the street will lead to human rights violations, but like i said not at all comparable to 73. In fact, most of the dead so far are looters that got trapped inside supermarkets that were lit on fire, though there are a few victims of govt brutality/ gunfire.

In the past 10 years a lot of very serious corruption cases have come to light involving the elite, and the only punishment they got was mandatory ethics classes (if interested, Penta case, was about bypassing campaign finance laws and evading taxes, the involved basically made illegal campaign donations to influence politics and shorted the treasury millions of dollars in the process). The military and the police have also been exposed in the past 10 years, for mass corruption, incompetence, fabricating evidence, and even participating in robberies, drug deals, and illegal sales of weapons. So these protests, certainly are driven by a feeling of economic inequality, but also receives widespread support from middle and upper classes because the incompetence and corruption affects everybody.

The other big components are pensions, education and health care. The pension system was reformed during the dictatorship to be individual account managing forced contributions cut directly from your paycheck that go to one of (i think 8 now, not sure) Pension Fund Managers. These are private companies that operate with a govt license, charging each person a monthly fee for managing their fund. The idea was that it would force chileans to save, create a capital market and ensure that the pension system would be funded since your pension depended entirely on your contributions. They promised 70-80% of your salary would come through in your pension. In reality, people are retiring with 20-30% of their salary, while the private pension fund managers have been racking up obscene yearly profits in the billions. Right now the sytem pays an average pension of about 180 US; thats not even a third of the minimum wage here. Even well off, professional people are getting shafted on their pensions, its not a problem exclusive to the uneducated poor. And of course, corruption and colusion were also discovered inside the pension system. Also notable is that when this pension system was forced through by the military dictatorship, the military and police left themselves out of it and stayed in the old system; they receive much higher pensions for much fewer years of service. Also, senators and presidents get lifetime pensions regardless of how long they serve.
Education is the most privatized in the world and despite some attempts at reform in the last few years its still really expensive and terrible quality, even if you do have the money to pay for a private school/university; same goes for health care.

Now what hater does have a point about is the way things are reported. In ecuador, chile, as in many other countries, these policies are forced through physical or economic violence by outside actors (like the IMF), but when people peacefully protest they are either written off as irrelevant or discredited as violent looters. But in Hong Kong, where protestors have also looted shops, destroyed private property, attacked police with bombs and knives, they are freedom fighters. That is entirely because the west loves to condemn rival china. Here, the news is that chileans are spoiled for looting and pillaging despite having such a great economic situation. That is total bull and ill agree with hater on that.

So I looked them up. They don't seem very important to anything. Why should an American news network cover an arrest of a couple of non famous Chilean protesters?

amen great post. I will say that I did not know Pinera and only detest him for his response to the riots. he immediately said Chile is at war and sent in the military and gave them green light to obliterate the protests. that is not only an impeachable offense IMO but he should ho to jail for that.

i stop there because Indont care what he did in the past or what he willndonin the future. he should be impeached and tried for crimes. people have to go to jail for this response. and Innever compared this to the military brutality of the 60s hut we are in the year 2019. this kind of is brutal and sadistic still and should not be happening in a so called democracy

I woke up to this news today, sorry I cant find an english article:

    https://www.biobiochile.cl/noticias/...en-chile.shtml

    The most interesting bit:
    ---
The interim chief of diplomacy for the US, Michael Kozak, indicated to a congressional committee that they had detected "foreign actors" in the protests. "we've identified false social media accounts located in russia pretending to be Chilean, but in fact all the message they are making is trying to undermine all the ins utions and chilean society," he explained, clarifying that "now, that doesnt mean that was the cause for the riots in Chile"

    ...

OAS secretary general Luis Almagro denounced what he described as a "pattern" of destabilization of latin american countries by Venezuela and Cuba, first in Colombia and Ecuador and now also in Chile.

    (and from the comments):

"well for the people who languish in waiting lists and die and the grandparents who commit suicide because they cant survive on their pensions its the fault of cuba and russia and venezuela hahaha and the politicians that make deals so that corruption isnt investigated its russia and venezuela's fault they steal and hold up investigations hahaha."

"there are very concrete facts that have caused great indignation en the chilean people that have motivated these massive and continued protests. I dont defend Maduro, but Almagro's office has the obligation to explain how Maduros regime managed to unchain the following events:
-The fraud of 34 million USD from police
-The fraud of about 10 million from the army
-The refusal of the local IRS to prosecute millions of dollars of tax fraud that was used to elect most of the current parliament
-Several price fixing cases in several industries with little punishment
-An industrial fishing law, written by the industry and passed by their stooges, that gifts chile's immense coast to 7 elite families for perpetuity
-That water rights, a public good for all chileans, have been gifted to a few businesses that have made huge profits through years of serious drought. In past few months small farmers have lost thousands of animals for lack of food and water."

See, this is the kind of thing that makes me agree with hater. The only mention made by the US and OAS has been to characterize this as foreign directed riots. There have been literally millions of people protesting, about injustices that have gone for decades, but they want to make this about russia or venezuela. GTFO!! I had this same argument re: 2016 russia collusion. I think its possible trump did have direct contacts and that direct intervention of voting machines/databases might have occurred and Im all for investigating that, he stinks rotten. But when all you had was facebook posts by russian trolls, and you want to accuse others of foreign intervention with the history you have, it takes some ing nerve. Of course that Kozak er hedged his statement saying the russian campaign wasnt the cause for whats happening, but he accomplished his real intent- characterize the situation as rioting instead of protest, and plant the seed of doubt re: foreign intervention. Almagro finally made a statetment as OAS head 5 days after the protests began, and the idea of a "pattern" linking whats happened in colombia, chile and ecuador as some kind of communist plot is LAUGHABLE. the only pattern you could possibly argue is that all three have been fighting the same colonial demons, with economies that depend on the price of commodities, political structures built to protect elites instead of prevent disenfranchisement, and the long shadow of US intervention through direct and indirect means hanging over every decision made. You want to talk about destabilization, when that has been a cornerstone for US diplomacy for a century already

yes that is typical american modus operandi

it happens here when elections dont go the way the Deep State likes here. they blame Russia, social media, etc

the scale of the riots obliterates the US muh Russia conspiracy theory. theres no way in a few russian bots would compell tens of thousqndw of students to revolt

the saddest thing is the latin american countries mostly all toe the line of the US or stay quiet. we qre all supposed to be latin american brothers but the leaders are not they are US puppets and traitors to their nations

also my research tells me the violence mostly in rupted hy the hands of the chilean police

the students just mobbed the metro stations and enetered without paying as protest
sure some of them idiots destroyed some metr property like machines, etc

but it was the police response who entered the metro and started beating and dragging students out into arrest that prompted the mob to start burning

also lets not forget Hong Kong is also being influenced by social media and “foreign actors” even moreso than chile. except these actors are USA thus why no mention of this by US agencies.

    Of course
funny you laugh because, if i'm not mistaken, the nyt came out this past week with an article about how the deep state exists.

there's def a deep state whether they're individuals collectively all nefarious or a cabal of sorts. if there wasn't then RUSSIAGATE would've never been a thing nor false flags and the such.

you're just so much of a pussy, which we all know you are, that you side with losers and laugh at those who speak the truth.
