I don't think anyone was expecting a drastic drop off, he's too good to fall off immediately. But, he really is at the top of his game playmaking-wise now. He's made up for his relative loss of athleticism by being a very, very smart player.
Whether he is the absolute best, will have to be decided in Spring, and not now.
By the way, it's also pretty clear why he came to the Lakers. He found out the hard way that him and Cleveland alone were not big enough to pull big-time free agents. He needed an extra asset, and he chose the historically consistent one: the pull of L.A. 10 years ago he was good enough and young enough to blaze his own trail, at 34 he needed something more. Good for him, I guess.
