Nono, you think it has anything to do with signing/trading for terrible defensive players and playing them more minutes than better defenders?

    Not sure tbh.

Ye of little faith. We are toying with them to make the big 4th quarter comeback. However thanks for the reminder about the wine, I've got a nice Bordeaux, from Bobo's neighbourhood ready to drown my sorrows with should we lose this ^^$$%^ing game.

Memphis is shooting wide open threes all game. Nobody even closing out.

This team has packed it in. They don’t care.

Even the best defensive coach couldn't do much with Forbes, Mills, Belli, Lyles, DeRozan, etc., etc., etc.

well the coach could just try to play only half of those bad defenders and replace them with good defenders like say a Demarre Carroll. Instead he thinks it's an effort issue

Certainly the team looks bad in defense. Popovich needs to fix it urgently.

I see most of the players trying, maybe Rudy Gay is the only one not working hard (Aldridge some times)d. The defensive schemes are unclear, players don't seem to know what to do in certain situations. Defensive organization isn't good and communication is not effective.

    • Murray gambles too much, leaves his stands too often, suffers passing p&r over and under and sometimes and he doesn't complete his job denying the pass to the roller.
    • White is really good in the p&r cover, but he's not focused in the weak side.
    • Aldridge is supossed to protect the rim with his body but he just uses his hands trying to deflect/block the ball and hardly ever stays on the ground clashing opponents. He's too low and slow in p&r, and, in switches, he's not being active enough, allowing 3pt shots.

These 3 are supossed to be our defensive anchors and they are far from being just solid. They are supossed to balance their team mates weaknesses with his defensive contribution but it's not happening. So far, I can excuse the 2 youngsters. There is no valid excuses for LA.

    • Poetl is key in the second unit, when he does his job, our bench outscores opponent's. He finishes defensive posessions, using his size and agility, protecting the rim and getting the rebound. Last few games he has shown his weak, soft version. I would give some minutes to Eubanks at the C just because he plays hard. No reason to play Jakob if he doesn't play hard. Send him two games to the dog house as a reminder. Even Metu looked functional replacing Poetl vs Boston!

    • Our shooting guards are vulnerable, we all know. When they play vs starters or together, they are completely exposed. Mills is a veteran and he's fast, he manages to do a decent job in front of the second backcourts but Forbes can't guard his man unless he gives his 110% and currently I'm afraid he's more worried about scoring.

    • DeRozan is matching up with the best wing in the other team as Murray is getting the PGs and Forbes has to be hidden. Even when his man is not great he's being beaten too easily in 1on1 actions. He should take some pride and be more phisycal. It's a shame because he has improved in most of the other defensive tasks: he's really active being one pass away from the ball, his activity in the weak side is better, he's not getting caught in screens and his overall awareness is good. I see him trying to play better defense but he needs to improve the most important thing: don't let your man get by you.

    • Belinelli shouldn't be playing for several reasons and defense is one of them. Lonnie Walker is another unexperienced player but at least is about time he becomes a decent/good/great defender... with some playing time.

    • Carroll doesn't look like a good defender to me. Hopefully he can use some veteran tricks and show some toughness and phisicallity vs 1on1 specialists. He's not looking good at all into the motions: bad positioning, slow, no helps, no effective closeouts...

    • Liles is doing more than expected in both ends of the court. Nobody expects Trey to slow down stars playing his position but he's doing a solid job regularly. He doesn't look like a first-year-in-San-Antonio-defensive-system player. Gay is being so horrible that as soon as Liles has been able of scoring some shots, he has started losing his minutes against him. Rudy's defense is so bad that Popovich has played several times with DeRozan as PF in the 4th quarter. And Gay usually blames his teammates for his mistakes!

Finally, I would like to bring two names to the conversation: Ettore Messina and Ime Udoka. Team defense looks bad and most of the players are trying. Same plays, again and again and there is no clear answer: small to small hand-off + P&R; weak side help vs roller in side P&R; flare screens on top; Cs, PFs missmatch guarding 1on1 at the 3pt line; etc. What are the defensive principles, the rules? What is every player expected to do in the most common sets?Every team is hurting us with its plan A, what's happening with the scouting and defensive game plan? It's not only Popovich, what about the assitants Hammond and Hardy?

Like I said in another thread Flopovich defensive schemes are getting exposed without Messina and Udoka. The Spurs are the worst team in the NBA guarding the paint. That's the main problem right now
