CNN, citing an Arab diplomatic source, reported that Iran notified Iraq in advance and that Iraqi officials then tipped U.S. troops before the attack began. A U.S. defense official also told CNN that Iraqis were told by Iran to stay away from certain bases.
The militaries of Finland and Lithuania, which had personnel at one of the targeted bases, said they received information about an imminent attack and had time to take shelter or leave the base.

Come on now. If (big if) he can show some restraint and call it even, I'll give him credit for doing the right thing by not escalating. Regardless of his thought process.
At this point, him not doing anything is fine with me.
Sure, we can applaud his not escalating further, but I can certainly question the inconsistency. Makes killing the general look like a big mistake now.

Iran gave advance warning they were going to hit the base so everyone could leave or shelter. They made it clear it was a face saving move for local consumption and they didn't plan to escalate beyond that.

I really don't know enough about the Middle East to make a definitive comment on that. If the general was as big a deal as reported, then trading that for weathering a missile attack seems like a good deal.
I doubt that Trump knew this was going to be the outcome when he pulled the trigger given the broad range of outcomes. But if this is all that happens, he came out on top.
That being said, I personally don't think this is the end of it. And a bigger can of worms was opened than he (Trump) realizes.
I'll also add that Trump doesn't want to see $100 oil prices heading into an election so he has some incentive to not stir things up any more. Regardless of his motivation, this is a good thing.
How so? Bush and Obama passed on taking action against him because the cost would be too high. If this is the end of it then the cost has been Iran blowing up some sand. That's a Trump W any way you slice it.

I said originally killing the guy was a mistake.
So he can either escalate or not. If he chooses to not, then he made the right choice.
