I think part of COVID denialism is that the pandemic sent the US into recession and along with that, Trump's callousness to suffering Americans, his incompetence and his magical thinking wrecked his re-election chances.
People don't want to believe COVID is real because they can't accept that Trump started losing in 2020. That's why they don't want to give COVID any credence, even when it kills their loved ones.
