LONDON (AP) Nations across Europe moved to reimpose tougher measures to stem a new wave of COVID-19 infections spurred by the highly transmissible omicron variant, with the Netherlands leading the way by imposing a nationwide lockdown.
All non-essential stores, bars and restaurants in the Netherlands will be closed until Jan. 14 starting Sunday, caretaker Prime Minister Mark Rutte said at a hastily arranged press conference Saturday night. Schools and universities will shut until Jan. 9, he said.
In what is surely to prove a major disappointment, the lockdown terms also rein in private holiday celebrations. Residents only will be permitted two visitors except for Christmas and New Year's, when four will be allowed, according to Rutte.
"The Netherlands is going into lockdown again from tomorrow," he said, adding that the move was "unavoidable because of the fifth wave caused by the omicron variant that is bearing down on us."

"Full protection" is a misnomer. Obviously we've never had that.
Why my Covid anxiety is ing now, all these months later

Poor fella. Somebody should tell him we got another 1-3 years before everybody has been infected for the first timeI feel emotionally raw. Everything from anger to exhaustion to resignation sits heavier on me now than it did at that Thanksgiving dinner a few weeks ago.
I'm exhausted from the constant not knowing. Each new day feels like it brings a darkening prediction of what the future holds, and I'm tired. I am a creature of habit. I love knowing what the next day will bring. With the pandemic, it feels like the situation is changing by the hour.
And I'm resigned to the fact that none of this is going away anytime soon. The idea that Covid will be in the rear-view mirror by March feels, at this point, quaint. I have watched the goalposts for the end of the pandemic moved so many times that I can't even remember where they were a month ago.
Location dependent, I guess.

"This guy tweeted his opinion..."
The bulk of WH's offerings.
feel free to read the linked deep dive and comment on that, the opinion/caption condenses it nicely.
I notice you have no comment on that either![]()
I'd have a Twitter account if I gave 2 s what people on Twitter think.
Apparently you don't read either![]()
How much would it cost to vaccinate the world?
By some estimates, as little as $50 billion.
Drop in the bucket of defense expenditures, aren't airborne pandemics worth protecting against, or are the potential profits too hefty?
I'll throw in an estimate..
200 billion.
That's not much
How much can you pay?
This isn't just the vaccine. This is distribution, administration and medical personnel. It's tracking and following up.
It's like saying it costs X amount to paint your car, because the cost of paint is such and such.
how much is the US defense budget over the next ten years?
So you think the US doesn't need defense? Soldiers don't need to be paid?
we're somewhat over-extended. mostly a domestic subsidy, tbh.
Military keynesianism
Dr. Anthony Fauci does not believe the pandemic will reach a state in which Americans can go without masks in closed spaces, even with good filtration.
Southwest Airlines CEO Gary Kelly told a U.S. Senate panel on Wednesday that "masks don't add much, if anything" in fighting the spread of COVID-19 on airplanes.
In a direct rebuke of Kelly's comments, Fauci told ABC's "This Week" that he doesn't believe the pandemic will reach a state in which masks will be unnecessary especially for closed spaces.
When asked point blank if he thought there might be a point where masks are unnecessary on airplanes, he said "I don't think so."
Masks forever![]()
"masks are just a placebo"
After doing the whole show maskless, they did this for some reason
