The media coverage of this thing has gotten insufferable. A lot of people get the flu and a small percentage of those people have weak immune systems and die from it. That’s all there is to it.

    From another message board:

I'm a doctor and an Infectious Diseases Specialist. I've been at this for more than 20 years seeing sick patients on a daily basis. I have worked in inner city hospitals and in the poorest slums of Africa. HIV-AIDS, Hepa is,TB, SARS, Measles, Shingles, Whooping cough, Diphtheria...there is little I haven't been exposed to in my profession. And with notable exception of SARS, very little has left me feeling vulnerable, overwhelmed or downright scared.

I am not scared of Covid-19. I am concerned about the implications of a novel infectious agent that has spread the world over and continues to find new footholds in different soil. I am rightly concerned for the welfare of those who are elderly, in frail health or disenfranchised who stand to suffer mostly, and disproportionately, at the hands of this new scourge. But I am not scared of Covid-19.

What I am scared about is the loss of reason and wave of fear that has induced the masses of society into a spellbinding spiral of panic, stockpiling obscene quan ies of anything that could fill a bomb shelter adequately in a post-apocalyptic world. I am scared of the N95 masks that are stolen from hospitals and urgent care clinics where they are actually needed for front line healthcare providers and instead are being donned in airports, malls, and coffee lounges, perpetuating even more fear and su ion of others. I am scared that our hospitals will be overwhelmed with anyone who thinks they " probably don't have it but may as well get checked out no matter what because you just never know..." and those with heart failure, emphysema, pneumonia and strokes will pay the price for overfilled ER waiting rooms with only so many doctors and nurses to assess.

I am scared that travel restrictions will become so far reaching that weddings will be canceled, graduations missed and family reunions will not materialize. And well, even that big party called the Olympic Games...that could be kyboshed too. Can you even
    imagine?

I'm scared those same epidemic fears will limit trade, harm partnerships in multiple sectors, business and otherwise and ultimately culminate in a global recession.

But mostly, I'm scared about what message we are telling our kids when faced with a threat. Instead of reason, rationality, openmindedness and altruism, we are telling them to panic, be fearful, su ious, reactionary and self-interested.

Covid-19 is nowhere near over. It will be coming to a city, a hospital, a friend, even a family member near you at some point. Expect it. Stop waiting to be surprised further. The fact is the virus itself will not likely do much harm when it arrives. But our own behaviors and "fight for yourself above all else" at ude could prove disastrous.

I implore you all. Temper fear with reason, panic with patience and uncertainty with education. We have an opportunity to learn a great deal about health hygiene and limiting the spread of innumerable transmissible diseases in our society. Let's meet this challenge together in the best spirit of compassion for others, patience, and above all, an unfailing effort to seek truth, facts and knowledge as opposed to conjecture, speculation and catastrophizing.

Facts not fear. Clean hands. Open hearts.
Our children will thank us for it.

South Korea has tested more than 140,000 people for the new coronavirus and confirmed more than 6,000 cases. Its fatality rate is around 0.6%.
This suggests that, as many health experts have predicted, the virus' fatality rate seems to decrease as more cases are reported.
That's because more widespread testing leads more mild cases to be included in the count.

    https://www.businessinsider.com/sout...th-rate-2020-3

Not as bad as original estimates of mortality but still 6x the average flu.

What would the other two have done differently?

The only miss step by our government thus far has been a bad batch of reagents. Even if that had not happened it wouldn't change anything. The government cannot stop that which cannot be stopped. Only China had the brief opportunity to contain and eliminate this virus, once they failed the rest was/is inevitable.

Irrelevant. I'm just saying if a bunch of people get infected at a Trump rally after the he's been talking it's not a good look. You may proceed with your knee-jerk defense.

So still pretty bad, but sounds like not even the same ballpark as 1918 Spanish flu thankfully.

The good thing is that this virus is mutating. They've identified the first strain as "L" which was more deadly, the second strain less so and is the one spreading more widely. So it's following the normal natural selection process for a new endemic virus. Mutating to become less lethal to it's host.

They say that process was reversed with the Spanish Flu because of WWI. That's why the first wave was basically a normal flu but the 2nd wave it killed primarily young healthy people.

Do you have a link to the news? Sounds like an interesting read.

I thought I read its mutation was considerably slower than traditional flu. With a much less lethal strain I would guess it should be likely to infect more than the initial projections of 40-70% of the world getting it?

Also, is this second strain likely to give one antibodies to resist the first strain?

Trump Is Withholding Coronavirus Testing Kits From Governors

    Andy Slavitt
    ✔@ASlavitt

I talked this afternoon to 2 governors who told me the CDC will not commit to getting them tests.

Whether because they don’t want the numbers known or incompetency, state & local governments feel abandoned.

    https://twitter.com/justinhendrix/status/1236754541854494720 …

    ==============

    Justin Hendrix
    ✔@justinhendrix

106 people in New York have confirmed cases of Coronavirus.

But- "As of Saturday only about 120 people in New York City had been tested for the virus.

And it has been become clear that the new coronavirus was spreading faster than testing was increasing.

    ================

Trump is trying to hold the number of coronavirus cases down by not providing an adequate number of test kits so that people can be tested.

If people can’t be tested, they also can’t be added to the number of confirmed cases in the United States.

The administration is trying to cover up theirbungled coronavirus response by underreporting the number of people who test positive for the virus.

There is no reason for the CDC not to immediately give testing kits to any state that requests them.

If the United States doesn’t provide an adequate number of testing kits, it could be facing a public health catastrophe.

The CDC has been politicized and is doing Trump’s bidding.

At a time when America needs a rapid response, governors can’t get coronavirus test kits.

Trash and his mafiya and corps of sycophants are betting the crisis will pass and they will look like smart ones.

Trump was warned of a pandemic ‘that could lead to massive rates of death’ by the intel director he fired

a do ent from the office the Director of National Intelligence Dan Coats’

2019 “Worldwide Threat Assessment,” which specifically warns of a disease like the coronavirus.

    Coates explained:

“the United States and the world will remain vulnerable to the next flu pandemic or large-scale outbreak of a contagious disease that

could lead to massive rates of death and disability,

    severely affect the world economy,

    strain international resources, and

increase calls on the United States for support.”

It has become clear that neither Trump nor his administration took the warning seriously.

Here is a link to the abstract. There is a pdf link to the full study
    https://academic.oup.com/nsr/advance...searchresult=1

    Notable quotes

Human intervention may have placed more severe selective pressure on the L type, which might be more aggressive and spread more quickly. On the other hand, the S type, which is evolutionarily older and less aggressive, might have increased in relative frequency due to relatively weaker selective pressure.
Among the 27 viruses isolated from Wuhan, 26 (96.3%) were L type, and only 1
(3.7%) was S type. However, among the other 73 viruses isolated outside Wuhan, 45 (61.6%)
    were L type, and 28 (38.4%) were S type.

This is just from wiki on the 1918 pandemic

This increased severity has been attributed to the cir stances of the First World War.[97] In civilian life, natural selection favors a mild strain. Those who get very ill stay home, and those mildly ill continue with their lives, preferentially spreading the mild strain. In the trenches, natural selection was reversed. Soldiers with a mild strain stayed where they were, while the severely ill were sent on crowded trains to crowded field hospitals, spreading the deadlier virus. The second wave began, and the flu quickly spread around the world again. Consequently, during modern pandemics, health officials pay attention when the virus reaches places with social upheaval (looking for deadlier strains of the virus).[98]
I don't think anyone knows if having one strain gives immunity to the other. Those reports of people being re-infected within weeks of being cleared makes me think not.

I was feeling pretty good about this not being as bad as first thought but today Italy reported 133 deaths and is putting basically all of Northern Italy (a third of their population) under military quarantine.

Honestly don't know what to think now. Maybe this is leaked out of that ing lab and the govt's know it.

Currently they've identified 2 strains--an "S" (ancestral and less severe) and the "L" (mutated version and more severe)---you can get one or the other or both--both circulating here in the US
