Be as scared as you want to be.
Getting a broad, accurate picture takes time and a little work. Getting the picture wrong can be costly. One or two million Americans would have died of COVID-19 if we'd all been following your studiously fear-phobic pronouncements about it.

For me learning about COVID-19 dispels uncertainty and presents possible strategies. Kind of the opposite of fear and panic.

    YMMV

We are just learning about "long haul" infections.

That will get expensive quick, given our poorly developed, inefficient health care infrastructure.

The various COVID minimzers in this thread seem to be narrowly focused on the risk of death, ignoring morbidity, disability and persistent post-infection symptoms that interfere with life and work.

    Why might that be?
Because death is by far the most serious threat? I mean, people talked about the deaths from tsunami and didn't consider how it affected people's everyday lives after. Priorities I suppose.

    sums it up well.

always fun talking to the poster child of confirmation bias.

You could dress up in a Trump costume, stab someone to death in front of him, and all he would see is Trump kissing babies.

Few ITT seem to be open to a frank reckoning re: the long tail of COVID-19. Chronic symptoms, disabilities and social dislocation.

Death is the most dramatic and newsworthy effect but doesn't follow that it's the only important one, or that others should be ignored.

A single-minded emphasis on COVID mortality crowds out other effects and gives an objectively limited picture of its impact.

I have little idea how prevalent it is, so that affects the ultimate drag on the economy.

Given that this will almost certainly run through the population almost entirely, even with a high degree of vaccination, coupled with the new variants, we will probably achieve a pretty high percentage of the population that will have had the disease in a couple of years.

It stands to reason that even if the % of people infected become long haulers is small, since the absolute number of people is going to be pretty large, there is a potential for this to be fairly expensive, economically.

Any cost is made worse by our poorly developed health care infrastructure and inefficient health care rationing schema.

So dying isn't nearly as important as dying and still having lasting effects.

I wasn't lobbying for any specific ranking, just emphasizing that besides the ongoing level of avoidable mass death, the panoply of effects on human health and society should be considered.

Florida May Have Undercounted Its COVID-19 Deaths by Thousands

After California and Texas, Florida has had the
most coronavirus cases since the pandemic began last year, and earlier this month crossed the 2 million mark.

In the last week, the number of variant cases
    doubled to 2,330,

while the overall number of new cases has been rising steadily and averaged nearly
    5,000 per day.

    As of March 29, 2021,

    more than 33,000 people have
    died in the state.

    And, according to
a new report from Yahoo News,

the number may actually be closer to 40,000.

    https://www.vanityfair.com/news/2021...ovid-19-deaths

If anybody bothers to look, they will probably find that all Repug/red states LIED about pandemic deaths, to align with Trash's downplaying The Trump-Made Pandemic Criminal Manslaughter of 300K Americans.

In those states, "excess deaths" were not reported as pandemic deaths, but as pneumonia, etc. or, in FL's case, the coroners' reports left off the cause of death under dictate from Desantis.
