COVID prevents millions of people from working

Millions of Americans are struggling with long-term symptoms after contracting COVID-19, with many of them unable to work due to chronic health issues. Katie Bach, a nonresident senior fellow at the Brookings Ins ution, said she was "floored" when she started crunching the numbers on the ranks of workers who have stepped out of the job market due to long COVID.

Her analysis found that an equivalent of 1.6 million people are missing from the full-time workforce because of the disease, which can leave people incapacitated for months with persistent symptoms including fatigue, brain fog, headaches, memory loss and heart palpitations

No doubt deaths and hospitalizations are most important politically as they pose the most immediate threat to people and the delivery of healthcare, but infections per se have important public health implications, given COVID's chronic dimensions. If early reports of COVID related organ damage, chronic fatigue, neurological deficits, cardiac/clotting issues, increased risk of stroke and immune derangement/senescence continue to surface, it will have been clear that managing caseload -- i.e, preventing infection -- will have been and continues to be extremely important, again, from a public health perspective.

But, momentous as COVID and its sequelae might be for quality of life, life expectancy and excess death in the USA, it's probably a mistake to think these matter very much to most people and still less to our economic and political masters. Mass death and morbidity are more or less background assumptions until the wealth of the renter class is threatened and public health expenditures are more a less a drag on their projected profits.

My guess is that in adddition to better quality of llife, medium to long term the countries that managed to keep cases low until more effective vaccines and treatments were available may reap economic and strategic advantages. The failure of the precautionary principle in public policy could turn out to be our undoing in multiple dimensions.. We will see.

Letting COVID cases explode looks like an epochal mistake to me, materially and strategically. I think it's going to be really costly and put us at a compe ive disadvantage to other countries.
I understand long COVID is a concern, but the reality is that we've failed at containment. You can pin it at a number of reasons, and there's clearly a lesson there (which we probably are not going to learn).

The only thing that has kept infections away from millions, what I would argue is a minority these days, is some simple discipline, that apparently some people aren't able to follow. Everybody is not the same, some are plain ol dumb, but some other people have needs, need to go out there and work, etc.

    Biden has been crushing it
He's done an amazing job... very challenging situation, especially with vaxx s.

One of the only few areas where he still ranked highly all the way until last month, and even now it's a relatively small gap, tbh...
