we'll take off our shoes for the rest of our lives at airports because 3,000 people died on one day two decades ago, but won't put on a mask when 3,000 people/day are dying right now from a contagious respiratory disease.

If this were happening in Venezuela, we'd say they were starving their own country and blame socialism. Since it's happening here, we'll just say "people are hungry," I guess because the USA makes no pretense of feeding it own people.

(It's probably also absurd to expect capitalism to satisfy basic human needs, historically, it has never done so.)

There are no small number of countries (Australia, New Zealand, Germany, Canada, Ireland, Taiwan, Hong Kong, etc..) that are not experiencing mass death or uncontrolled nationwide outbreaks.

Are you suggesting it was impossible to have avoided the outcome we have here?

By the end of February we'll be around 600,000 dead. That's about 10 times a bad flu year.
Why stop at 90 days? Whats gonna happen in 90 days that will slow it down?

Nothing Id say well be around 3k carcasses a day until April tbqh

My big banker clients already said tbey are not opening back their offices until a vaccine is highly available which will be next August in their estimation

1st half of 2021 is already a lost cause

The gruesome specatacle of our health care system breaking down, people dying by the thousands because they can't get treatment for otherwise survivable non-COVID medical conditions and mass death like we haven't since the Spanish Flu -- might change behavior. Maybe an effective thereputic treatment will become widely available before vaccines do.

The upper end of the IHME projection is ~5,000 deaths per day in the US by the end of February. I'm hoping hard we can avoid that, we'd have to do things to mitigate transmission. Since neither infrastructure nor political will exist for mass testing and social tracing, social distancing, masking and stay at home orders are pretty much all we've got until effective treatment and vaccines get here.

PFA guess, neither COVID-19 aid nor effective treatment will be made available anytime soon, the duration and intensity of transmission will be heightened and prolonged by states that refuse to close businesses and issue shelter in place orders, because "muh economy" always trumps the well-being of people in the most indoctrinated country in the world.

Your response was expected. Of course you're good because you live in the United States of America where freedom is a God given right and Capitalism is the only catalyst to achieving the American dream.

There's the indoctrination I was referring to.

Worshipping a coercive, deadly, intensely exploitative and completely amoral economic system; taking the side of that system against anyone who dares to criticize it; conflating it with freedom and patriotism; stipulating that it is the best thing in the world; and claiming that there is no alternative.

You live in the USA? You work a job? That job allows you to purchase items like the computer/phone you're posting on ST with? You're able to create opportunity by becoming your own boss? etc...

You speak like you don't live in the same system that has afforded you plentiful opportunities to excel.

I've been lucky. The system still thrives on exploitaion, misery and death.

Not as expected as your take. This is a democracy where citizens have a voice. Saying other places do something better means a support for change. Empiricism and all that.

Back in 1776 you would have been a royalist stooge. In 1853, a landless sharecropper.

I suppose by sucking the corporate establishment you feel enfranchised. Given your lack of awareness this is not surprising.

    RIP, Dr. Carlos Araujo-Preza

Nationally, at least 1,425 health care workers have died of the disease, according to an incomplete database compiled by Kaiser Health News and The Guardian.
