median household income in the US is somewhere around 63k. while acknowledging that where you live can dictate what income levels provide what standard of living, making 2.5x the median household income is probably a good measure of being well off... would put you in the top 1/5. if you're talking individual, and not household income, thats a big difference as well

It still will get you far in a lot of areas in this country outside of CA,NY,DC. It will also still get you far in Cali as long as you are not living in LA,SF. I know this because I have relatives that live in an hour and half outside of LA and operates a small business that brings in that money.

Probably good to not let 1/3rd of the nation go homeless if any of us want to keep steady paychecks and not have our neighborhoods burned to the ground. Guessing widespread social unrest from 1/3 of the country having nothing to lose might be pretty bad for the economy and all of our earnings.
