Lol pop is horrible at recognizing talent (not saying boban moves the needle in anyway but..) Remember this is the same coach who left Adebayo off the Nat team lmao...horrible talent evaluator.
I actually thought that was one of Pop's finer moments. The Spurs couldn't throw $7M per at him, and Boban was so loyal he wanted to stay for a min contract. Telling him that he needed to get that $21M payday was the right thing to do for the player.
But I also think Pop just hadn't wanted to mess with him all season, and wasn't going to do anything with him the next season either. Used right, Boban could be good for a 4-5 point swing in a lot of games. When you look at the average margin of victory, that translates into W's. Remember those?
They would've had to use some of Gasol's cap space to keep him. People hate Gasol, but he was way better than Boban. Hopefully the Spurs don't suck in two years, though, since they also traded their 2022 SECOND in order to get rid of Diaw. I wanted them to find a way to sign Eric Gordon that year. He's been a solid player at a position of need (at the time). I also really wanted them to sign Jared Sullinger, so it wasn't like I was batting 1.000 for my free agency wish list.
Nothing's made me regret the team letting Boban go though.

Imagine playing him in 2016 against the thunder instead of the turd towers. we’d probably have kawhi and would have won multiple les in the interim. thanks poop
Pretty sure it was a second round pick, not a first round
That's right, it was a 2nd. That had me scared for a moment.

2022 second round draft pick to Cleveland
San Antonio's 2022 2nd round pick to Cleveland (via Utah) [San Antonio-Utah, 7/7/2016; Cleveland-Utah, 12/23/2019]
Poop is an idiot
Sorry. I knew it was their second. Thought I had just written pick or something.
I'm not sure why so many folks hate on Pop these days. People much not have been alive to see the Spurs before 1998. I'd take all of Pop's shortcomings over what coached this team prior to his arrival.
He has pretty much ed up everything he’s touched since Tim left so now Tim is not around to cover for poop’s incompetence
Brynn and Beli. At the same time.
Before that, West and Diaw. At the same time.
That's not all, but it's short and to the point.
Ignorant answer.
He may not remember where he parked the car, but he's still a great coach.
Great coaches don't start Bryn Forbes when everyone is watching him get raped every night.
West and Diaw made sense. The talent was too good to pass up, and neither Tim nor LMA was coming off the bench.
Ed Jones, others on way to Pop rally 2020.
Don’t forget that DeMarre Carroll signing there Mr Helicopter
Pop encouraged Boban to take the payday. It was a great thing, not a bad thing.
He's still a great coach, but his "he's not ready" BS has been hurting the team since forever. What if he brought in Ginobili when we was actually drafted (Or was he under contract overseas?)? Might have taken one of those Laker chips, who knows.
Manu when he was drafted in '99 wasn't proven at that time. No one knew he was going to become the best player in Europe when the Spurs drafted him. It wasn't until I think '01 did people know Manu was going to be a star. Spurs got him in the summer of '02.
don't forget shipping out Bertans for free, trading Danny Green, giving Pau Gasol and Patty Mills 100 million $
