So as someone new and ignorant to the political process, what's stopping the Republican's SCOTUS nominee from being confirmed before the inauguration? Is it something just agreed on by both parties or is there some sort of law stopping it?

The vetting process generally takes at least 4-6 weeks, but that can easily be shortened. There’s theoretically nothing stopping it, the discussion is about whether they have the votes. Republicans up for re-election in tight races won’t want anything to do with a vote before Election Day.
