I think of the friend of the guy who got killed threw a signpost at it. Gardner and his dad went out to confront people not knowing who actually did it. I think Gardner would've beat the rap, but he lost the lease on his bars as a result of the killing so maybe he figured it was all for nothing.

His country didn't turn on him. He was indicted for a crime by a grand jury and faced a trial by a jury of his peers. That's the due process he is guaranteed by this country. If he and his dad didn't think this would be a possible outcome of his plan to "pull a military-style firewatch," they had no business being there and armed.
