players of todays NBA who would get shut down by 90s rules (3 steps is a travel, playoff fouls and hand checking allowed)

    Harden
    LeBron
    Westbrook
    Embiid
    Ben Simmons
    Tatum
    Curry
    Klay Thompson
    DeAngelo Russell
    John Wall
Dejounte Murray (not even good today but would be always injured and even worse in an era of physicality)
    Anthony Davis
    Demarcus Cousins
Durant (would cry so bad after one hard foul by a defending PF or SF)
    Tobias Harris
    Kuzma
    Etc

noe how every players in the 80s-2000s had it rough the first year in the NBA (besides TD) then they learned to bulk up for contact). Today guys like Curry can waltz through the lane putting up floaters or chucking step back 3s and cry to the refs when a defenders legs get within 10 feet of theirs.

players whose games work in both eras (old school and soft offensive era)

    Divac
    Antione Walker
    Dirk
    Ray Allen
    Korver
    Re
    Tyler Herro
    Dragic
    Harrell
    Pat Bev
    PJ Tucker
    Kobe
    Vince Carter
    young Shaq
    young TD
    Jimmy Butler
    Dame
    Kemp
    Marc Gasol
Brook Lopez (2019 the one that can shoot 3s)

basically hard nosed or tougher guys / not necessarily the gazelles but smart and durable, basketball skills like rebounding, defense or shooting

editorial this is also why draft sucks ass these days a lot. Teams want 18-19 year olds with Length a d athleticism and try to teach the basketball skills after the get signed. Problem is not all these kids even want to put in the effort, or can reach high skill ceilings, so they wash out. Also AAU teaches kids to align on super teams and 1v1 play vs team play. Which is why the USA can struggle in international play when facing teams who run systems, play defense, and if they keep it close, have huge advantages on strategy at the end. Vs give the ball to LeBron and clear out kind of offense they have in developmental US leagues.

90s players that would dominate today with the soft rules and super teams

    Grant Hill

    Shawn Kemp

    Dominique Wilkins

    Mark Price

    Bill Laimbeer

    Dale Ellis

    Doc Rivers

    Rik Smits

    Sabonis

    NVE

    Ewing

    Olajuwon

    Mullin

    DRob

    Elliott

    Iverson

    Juwan Howard

    Michael Finley

    Drexler

    Sir Charles

    Reggie Miller

    Allan Houston

    Spree

    Damon Stoudamire

basically anyone who can shoot and is even marginally tough

    I could go on

it looks bad bc the players were spread out and didnt concntrate on the big market teams. This is before huge cable TV contracts and such. Players got paid less and revenue sharing (I dont think) was not a thing, so each team had one or two good players and the rest scrubs. Also no BS 2020 player movement so no players getting Super Max then demanding trades. Just contract year try harding and try harding to get all star bids, etc. But the 90s had a ton of great players.
Glen Rice to me is the guy who would have the biggest jump. I remember watching him in his prime in Charlotte which was from '95-'98. He was great during those 3 years and you can say only Pippen/Hill were better than him at the SF spot. I would say that he was a much better scorer than Pippen/Hill during that 3 year stretch. I think he would blow up in this era. He was a great 3 point shooter and this era would favor his game tremendously.

I thought of him and the Person brothers as well but left them off since posters would probably just pick at Rice's decline later in his career more than his prime. But yes his prime 2-3 years were pretty great and transferable to other eras for sure.

edit: forgot about pre-injury Penny too.

some other guys who could probably hang, at least as fringe stars or good role players:

    Kevin Johnson

    Cliff Robinson

    Larry Johnson

    Tim Hardaway

Joe Smith and Donyell Marshall (their young Warriors years)

    Dell Curry

    Kukoc

Why would Doc Rivers dominate today's NBA? Iirc, his defense took a hit after rules changes and he was nothing special offensively?
Barkley - dude wasn't great shooter, weak defensively. Imagine him switching on all-star guards or defending pick and rolls. His defense was mostly post play, backing down defender for as long as possible and then shoot or draw double-team and pass out to open teammate. With today soft zones, this skill would be diminished.

nobody plays defense today. Youre not even allowed to play defense. Just run down the lane take 5 steps and dunk on somebody, or step back 3 and shimmy down the court.

Curry wouldn’t have lasted. His body is too fragile. Harden scoring mainly off free throws he woulda got chin checked. Kawhi’s mental health would have failed him. Chris Paul’s hamstrings would have been torn clean off his legs. I mean Jeez. What compe ion does LeBron have? Can you really dominate compe ion if there isn’t any? I mean a healthy Durant bends LeBron over raw with no Vaseline

Jordan was getting major food stamps in the 90s, so Harden would be getting more FTs in the 90s than now
Curry is in better shape than those 90s ice cream truck drivers

I will give you another HOF player would thrive Adrian Dantley who is now a fine HS level basketball referee in an association with me and is in incredible physical shape - works out vigorously every day. Nicest possible person and very humble but would score at will today- he also works as a school crossing guard at a school just to get additional health benefits.
