I wanted the Spurs to draft Matisse Thybulle last year. I felt that he was the 3&D guy we needed, and he was available at 19. (He was selected by Boston with the very next pick). His rookie year stats don't stand out at first glance, but do keep in mind that Philly was supposed to fight for the Eastern crown and he only played 20 minutes per game. But his rookie season highlights clearly show that his defensive IQ and tenacity are real, and he may have a bright future ahead of him.

And for this years draft, I wanted Vassell, and was ecstatic when we got him. They both have similar roles coming into the NBA, but Vassell is 2 inches taller and has longer wingspan. So my question is:

    1. Who do you think was the better prospect coming out of college?
    2. Who has more upside?
3 Who has a better fit in the Spurs system?

At this point, I think Thybulle will end up having a better career overall. He has the potential to be a defensive beast. I hope I'm wrong.

Thanks guys, I'd love to hear your input, and stay safe! FuxK Covid and the year 2020!

There's been no indication that Vassell has the longer wingspan.

Vassell was much better coming out of college as only a sop re. Thybulle stayed four years.

-Vassell appears better after his sophmore season that Thybulle was.

-I think Vassell does. He has some offensive upside that Thybulle doesn't necessarily have. Thybulle is a great defender but presumably has a lower ceiling after coming out after four season.

-Vassell. Apparently, in addition to being a good shooter and team defender is a good passer.

Thybull is 2.5 years older than Keldon, and only six months younger than Dejounte. While some four year guys do show improvement - like White - they generally come out as more finished products with lower ceilings. Had ceilings been higher, they likely would have come out of school earlier.

If Thybulle had even been a replacement level offensive player, he would have gone top 10.

Thybulle played in a zone defense in college. Who knows if he would have been as effective in a switching defense like what Vassell played in.

Spurs got this one right in a rare act of minor brilliance by an overall inept FO IMO

Thybulle may be unplayable in the playoffs for the foreseeable future. His struggles on offense was magnified in the playoff and his brand of defense didn't hold up. He was the primary defender against Tatum the first 2 games, he got blown by a lot and he dies on screens, by the end of the second game Brett gave up on him.

Vassell seems to be the better, overall, player. Vassell is a solid defender and has a better offensive game than Thybulle, and while Thybulle may be a better defender, he's limited on the offensive end.

Are you the Lenny Cooke, or just a fan? Nice post. I was a big fan of Thybulle too. My real fear was that Golden State would get him.

Thybulle has taken a big step forward in his defense this year. I know that Vassell is still a rookie, and came out after freshman year, but Thybulle is a bulldog on defense. And we could have gotten him....

Do you guys still feel that Vassell has more potential than Thybulle?

Averaging 1.6 steals and 1.1 blocks per game while only averaging 20 mpg is pretty amazing. Jonathan Isaac last year was one of the league leaders in stocks (steals+blocks) with 1.6 spg and 2.3 bpg, and he was my favorite free agent target before he signed his extension with Orlando. Thybulle is shooting 30% from three-- if he can get that up a bit, he'll be a very impactful player.

Thybulle is a one way player. His offense is still atrocious.

Thybulle already turned 24, Devin is 20.

Got drafted and the season started right away. No summer league or anything.
And he's still a better rookie than all the other young guys were.

Thybulle is already one of the best defenders in the league, but I think that Devin can get to that level.
And as already said, he's a negative on offense.

While Devin's floor is probably Danny Green and ceiling is way higher.
If DJ who literally had a floater and not a jumpshot as a rookie could develop in such good midrange shooter of the dribble, Devin can become a legit scorer.

But it won't happen if tank commander Patty gets an extension.

Vassell has a lot of room for growth. He seems to be stretching his O game week by week. He has a nice little dribble in pull up jumper now. To me, his offensive floor now is probably DeJounte with a 3 ball.

Lonnie often shuts down Lonnie, and I’m guessing Thybulle had virtually no impact on offense.

Simmons took some turns on Lonnie too-after a few half heated attempts where Simmons or Thybulle dogged him -LWIV slinked away
