That would be season 4 and that is a great spot to stop watching tbh. Season 5 was garbage.

First episode was mostly the goods. Had a nice overall plot and a lot of badass C.Hall moments. Just not really sold on the new main villain. They just don't seem very interesting so far.

Idk why there's so much hate for season 5. Outside of an extremely slow start with the uninteresting phase where Dexter's wife just died and he's acting weird, I thought it was way better than season 3. Jordan Chase was IMO the most interesting villain outside of the trinity killer.

Really? Jimmy Smits going way over the top was incredibly entertaining to me, and I did like the Skinner subplot a lot. I'm just not a Julia Styles fan and season 5 bored me to tears (although I did like Chase).
