Hope they still release stuff on occasion, one of the greats.
Daft Punk, the Parisian duo responsible for some of the most popular dance and pop songs ever made, have split. They broke the news with an 8-minute video led “Epilogue,” excerpted from their 2006 film Electroma. Asked if Daft Punk were no more, their longtime publicist Kathryn Frazier confirmed the news to Pitchfork but gave no reason for the breakup.
Thomas Bangalter and Guy-Manuel de Homem-Christo formed Daft Punk in Paris in 1993, helping to define the French touch style of house music. Their debut album, 1997’s Homework, was a dance music landmark, featuring classic singles “Around the World” and “Da Funk.” By the release of its follow-up, Discovery, in 2001, the duo had taken to making public appearances in the robot outfits that became their trademark. The singles “One More Time” and “Harder, Better, Faster, Stronger” cemented them as global superstars. Their imprint in the popular imagination continued to deepen in subsequent years, with records including third album Human After All, live LP Alive 2007, and the Tron: Legacy soundtrack album.
Twenty years into their career, Daft Punk blew up once more with “Get Lucky,” the lead single of their 2013 album Random Access Memories. The ubiquitous single sold millions of copies around the world and won two Grammys for the duo and guests Nile Rodgers and Pharrell Williams; follow-up single “Lose Yourself to Dance,” also featuring Pharrell, picked up a handful more awards. Random Access Memory, which is their last album to date, led to a spectacular Coac a headline set that encapsulated their magic and mythology. “When you know how a magic trick is done, it's so depressing,” Bangalter told Pitchfork in a 2013 cover story. “We focus on the illusion because giving away how it’s done instantly shuts down the sense of excitement and innocence.”
The album earned Daft Punk three further Grammys, including Album of the Year. The year of its release, they were also credited with co-production on several tracks from Kanye West’s Yeezus, including the formidable opening trio of “On Sight,” “Black Skinhead,” and “I Am a God.” They would go on to collaborate with the Weeknd on the 2016 single “Starboy”—Daft Punk‘s first Billboard singles chart topper—as well as “I Feel It Coming.”
Hope they still release stuff on occasion, one of the greats.
Was actually wondering a while ago if they maybe had something new in the works. This sucks tbh
That would have been great. One last gift as they peace out.
These guys did it right. Just 4 grade A albums over 28 years. They could have easily pump out mediocre albums every 2 yeasts but didn’t.
The Alive album is also fantastic.
Indeed. I became a fan too late. I didn't catch on until the Random Access Memory album. Dope group.
Maybe I’ll give it a listen now. Not a fan of live stuff.
their around the world/harder better faster stronger, is better than those two individual songs imo
at least we dont gotta listen to NBA playoffs overplay the outta their songs anymore
Pretty sure they can keep playing them if they want to
Keep the royalty money coming in baby.
I hope they keep collaborating with artists and not flat out retire retire. It’d be a shame.
Nah they only use new songs to suck off music industry's hot sellers of the day
Do the Spurs still play 2unlimited? Little off topic
Random Access Memories certainly is, tbh. I’d glady give up a year off the end of my life to have Get Lucky scrubbed from my consciousness.
Their first two albums are genius imo. And the Tron Legacy soundtrack is pretty damn good too.
Discovery is hard to stop listening to.
A musical opinion we can agree on.
lol i meat the tv broadcast playoff music but prob
Video plays over Touch. Such fitting song, tbh.
sad to see a black man like trill praise a pop group like daft punk but bash black rappers like ynw melly or da baby
pretty much a paradigm altering group... but had they put anything really relevant out in the last 5 years?
already felt like they were done
why, what does color have to do with musical taste?
that is like saying, it is sad to see a black man not liking fried chicken.....how ridiculous.
my wife is a bigger fan of daft punk than I.....she likes all that dance music stuff.....I like a song here or there, but overall not my cup of tea.
Kinda agree. Wondered why I don't have that many of their jams in my playlist.
Listened to their hits at work over this week. Definitely different vibe than. I historically consider "techno". I think ideal for after party vibe. Point being with friends. Notice no one has posted any songs in this thread.
