University of Texas athletic officials in October told Longhorn football players they had to remain on the field postgame for “The Eyes of Texas” singalong with fans because donors were upset by athletes protesting the game day tradition, two Longhorn football players told The Texas Tribune.

Previously, some student athletes had chosen not to participate after multiple games, as the song had become a flashpoint over the summer — especially for Black student athletes — given the alma mater song’s historical ties to campus minstrel shows.

The football players said athletics officials, in a meeting with the players after the Oklahoma game, referenced emails from donors who said the protests could impact their job prospects after graduating. At least one other player, former defensive back Caden Sterns, made a similar claim in a tweet on Monday but declined to be interviewed.

Two observations: UT can get new benefactors. It can also stand the criticism from its own players about the racist history of UT up to this day.

College athletes entertained us for no pay during a pandemic. I think they should be allowed to speak their minds.

Dude, I like "I've been working on the railroad" too, but face it, EOT kinda sucks.

Time for a new school tradition, a bunch of early 20th century minstrelsy isn't necessary, it's optional.

People don't want to pay to hear or see their teenaged indoctrinated beliefs.

No money, no football. Back to the ghetto

I put in the UT recruiting section as I had no idea about the donors.
I think it was deemed too political for the recruiting section and therefore did not get much response.
I probably needed to put in a different sports section so my bad for that.

I had no clue the song had anything to do with what it was traced back to.
Second, UT donors are all over the place; they are very liberal to very conservative. They have one thing in common, they are all rich (and possibly very spoiled). UT is a very politically diverse school, when I was there anyway. ATM is usually much more conservative with the rich donors and kids. Like any big school there are a bunch of guys that break the mold. rjv graduated from ATM with a degree in philosophy and I would definitely put him on the liberal part of the spectrum. He was about the only one who commented on this stuff at ATM and Texas in the recruiting section. He does not comment too much in the political section. Good dude though. Thoughtful.

So get rid of the national anthem and the flyovers. we don't need politics and indoctrination along with our football.

Of course they do. They want to hear and see their own teenaged indoctrinated beliefs forced on others under threat of defunding.

That sub-forum is mostly fan boy chat. Idiolizing jocks.

UT is probably one of the most liberal Universities in that region.

You have not heard of Rice in Houston.
And if you think the biggest donor, Red McCombs is a liberal, you dont know wtf you are talking about as a Slavic immigrant.
The young Republicans on campus was every bit as large as the young Democrats. And frats and sororities are still a big thing.
You probably need to shut it. It is a diverse school politically.

So put Rice on that short list.

My buddy voted for Biden recently and he said his brother was radicalized at Austin.

uhhh yeah... Thats why I can tell you how wrong you are.

That school helped me become a very fortunate man. The science program, both undergraduate and graduate, gave me a route to knowing really good people in biochemistry which led me to take part in a job I really love and find an absolute joy everyday. Can you say this?
I consider going there a huge advantage for the way I get to live.

And I dont live in Austin, I live in San Antonio. I drive there all the time. I still have ties there with the program and my friends who work there.
Yes, Californians have driven up prices... like this does not happen in places all over the country, people move to more advantageous areas for their line of work.
