Mid October in Michigan and Wisconsin is stunningly gorgeous, some of the world's best fall foliage, cool and crisp but not too cold, generally dry and sunny with occasional clouds. Great people, too, as long as you avoid the hoods and don't go to inner city DET/MIL. Madison and Grand Rapids are nice. The advantage of Michigan over Wisconsin is the daylight lasts an hour longer in Michigan.
