    Spurs Watch Villanueva
    June 18, 2003
    Matt Eagan
Charlie Villanueva worked out for the Spurs Tuesday in San Antonio.
He is expected to work out for the Dallas Mavericks today and New Jersey Nets Thursday before deciding whether to withdraw from the NBA draft.
Villanueva, a 6-foot-10 forward from Brooklyn, generally regarded as one of the top five high school players in the nation, has committed to UConn and will play in Storrs next fall if he does not play in the NBA.
The deadline for withdrawing his name is Thursday.huskymen

    :shock

I'll be surprised if it happens, but I'd love to have this kid on our team.

Yeah, he's a project, but he can jump out of the gym, is long and athletic (think Amare, but not as cut yet)...

He'd be perfect after some coaching and time in the gym.

The problem is that you don't want to waste a first round pick on an American project. That's a minimum of three years and roughly $3M, dependeing on the pick. A second rounder generally gets a two year deal, and that wouldn't be long enough for a project like this. That is why the euros are getting all of the burn. Pick 'em, and leave 'em overseas for a couple of years.

Charlie needs to go to school for a year or two. Either that, or go play in Europe and change his name to Villanueavavich.
