He's had a left medial malleolus stress fracture. Had surgery Dec 30, 2020. He refractured it and had surgery again June 29, 2021. He may never play professionally again. This on top of his other medical issues (shoulder surgery, another ankle surgery). He's a lousy lottery ticket. Low odds of paying off and will occcupy a roster spot. Pass.

That report was from NBA.com. Perhaps he had one of the rare instances of that stress fracture (0.6% to 4.1% per this paper: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC6380793/ )--which might make it more concerning?

Maybe. Just never see those. See stress fractures in metatatsals, mid foot osseous structures and prox tibias far more commonly.

If there is ANY chance of him ever coming back medically, the spurs SHOULD sign him lousy ticket or not! How do one gauge if a lottery ticket is lousy or not???? You guys.....

Depends on who the Spurs get in free agency but I wouldn’t be mad if they take the gamble. He should be had for the minimum with all these injuries, so the risk is low

Why not just bring back Dieng, since the team is going to be low on veterans?

Depending on what he wants for salary and role, I'm all for this. At a relatively small price and as a backup center he's ideal imo.

Hence buy low; red shirt year.
Let him rehab on his own damn dime. He’s not even worth a minimum deal if he can’t play NOW.

Right. At the moment, the Spurs have three bigs under contract. Poeltl, Samanic, Eubanks. That’s all there is. No way can the Spurs waste a roster spot on a big who’s physically unable to play.

He would have been pretty good like 2 years ago before he started tripping over his giant feet and hurting himself.

No one trying to sign Zach Collins is going to make the playoffs but maybe you get lucky and he heals up and is a serviceable big for a low cost. Or he never heals up and he’s still a low cost.

I wanted him for 2-3 million, not 7 and that over 3 years

That's our new charity case signing with Carroll coming off the books
