I don't really see how starving the whole country helps us in that regard, post 20 years of brutal fighting. Lots of orphans and embittered survivors of US policy there. Reportedly, 97% of Afghanis are or will soon be below the poverty line.

Because none of those 97% get the money that's stashed overseas, so, in essence, you're not helping them anyways. If anything, you ensure the 3% ruling the country get stronger.

Unfortunately that's a highly sectarian, tribal country, largely ruled by theocracy. Russia found out first, the US right afterwards. Hopefully China is next.
