That a country like Ukraine doesn't stand a snowball's chance in of defeating Russia. Russia is on par with China and the US in military might. If Russia negotiates it will be because Putin got what he wanted

Oh no, they are losing big time, just ask the Ukraine propaganda machine here. It's amazing how people will flat out deny the obvious and pretend a country who started the conflict by begging for help is somehow going to defeat Russia.

Thanks. I would've agreed with your initial sentence when this war started, especially before seeing the EU and US coming together the way they have. And it's still possible that Russia ends up bombing Ukraine into submission.

What's not so clear to me anymore is that Russia can afford a 5 year (much less a 10 or 20 year) war. Right now it's clear to me that Ukraine will have an endless supply of weapons if they're willing to fight, whereas Russia is going to have a lot more problems in the long run in that area.

What I call a win or loss is what the purported objectives are. For Russia, despite being fairly vague in their statements, I think it's pretty clear they ultimately want to annex Donetsk and Luhansk, on top of Crimea. Possibly Mariupol as well to have a full corridor on the Black Sea, and at the end of the day choke the Ukrainian commerce.

For Ukraine, it's defending their sovereignty, including those lands. If we go by cities taken, and considering this supposed overwhelming force, I can't think Russia achieved their objectives so far, and at this point it certainly looks pretty embarrassing, tbh...

Now you get the benefit of another month in.

Looks like UKR stands a pretty good chance of getting all of its territory back.

Russia keeps wasting irreplaceable troops and equipment on poorly planned out attacks.

Complicating Russia's ability to go furtehr is the fact that hundreds of thousands if not millions of young people (including a lot of draft age males) have fled the country and would presumedly ignore a draft.

It is doubtful:
that RUS could equip any large group of conscripts
could summon the administrative wherewithal to get the conscripts in the first place
Could provide any meaningful training to large numbers of troops

RUS simply does not have the organizational capacity to get enough troops into battle to replace their losses at the rate they are losing them.

Given you even had an entire battalion of Luhansk volunteers just leave the front line, who probably are not alone, in not wanting to be cannon fodder.

RUS's ability to conduct offensive operations has been degraded to the point where their offensive operations are getting smaller and smaller. Their ability to even hold what they have taken looks to be thin. UKR is building up at the same time RUS is wearing out.

Two cargoes of high-sulfur crude from the U.S. strategic reserve are headed to Italy and the Netherlands, according to tanker-tracking data and sources briefed by Bloomberg. The tankers have loaded crude at terminals connected to storage caverns of the SPR in Texas and Louisiana.


According to Matt Smith, oil analyst at commodity data firm Kpler, these would not be the last crude exports out of the U.S. SPR to Europe.


In April, some 1.6 million barrels of U.S. crude from the strategic reserve made its way to Europe, Smith told Bloomberg, adding: “That’s the largest amount of SPR crude that’s been shipped to the continent based on historical monthly data.”
