Pootin's decision to invade Ukraine was his own, since there are no restraints on him, nobody could have stopped him
So the US govt is worried that no-restraint Pootin could similarly decide unrestrained to use nukes
Pootin may see that he is effectively a dead man from losing the Ukraine war, will be at very least be removed from power,
so why not desperately take Europe and Russia down with him?

Blinken has said if Pootin nukes, even a 1 tonner, the conventional retaliation will be massive, probably destroying the entire Russian fleet, everywhere.
I can see the US using conventional weapons first if Russia drops a nuke. Id imagine it would be a powerful nuke but not a massively powerful one that they claim to have. Russia & the US would now be at war that would end in a compromise of some sort that would leave his country wondering who really won the conflict. Its the perfect escape of the humiliation of losing to Ukraine.
A "tiny" one-ton tactical nuke would be enough for NATO to respond massively with conventional weapons, to prevent any further nuking

Only a few mins here. Ran out of ammo and backed off south. Am a bit traumatized and need some sleep.
I have no idea what is going on except we engaged a lot of elements headed to Kreminna.
They have to be coming from Lyman and Zarichne. Right now we are in a safe area, it seems.
I have never seen so many dead, soon to be dead, and wounded people in my life.
People begging for help, but no way we can help them.
We have little to help them with, a small medical kit each, no morphine, and no time to render any kind of useful aid. No idea if they will live or die. You just keep moving.
One guy had obviously stepped on a mine by the side of the road.
One leg was gone at mid-thigh, the other one was broken lower down and his foot was backward.
He was trying to crawl somewhere on one good knee, trailing flowing blood out of a busted artery.
Unless he got help quick, he was gone.
He was talking calmly in Russian, saying over-and-over, “I will be home soon mother.”
Conscripts do not stand a chance.
