great post by Lionel Messi correcting statements that Manu is not the Messi of Basketball but himself is the Manu of soccer
TP is part of a loaded class next year. Dwayne Wade, Pau Gasol and Dirk Nowitzki.
In a sense, Karl, although he was inducted into the HOF for his coaching contribution, and having Dean Smith as his ideal coach he looked up to for inspiration during his collegiate time as a player as a Tarheel, but actually, it all began when he cut his teeth as an assistant coach with the Spurs, when after 3 knee surgeries that derailed his 5 year professional career in the ABA with the Spurs! In his speech, he credited Doug Moe and Bob Bass for lighting his coaching career with an opportunity to be an assistant. So, Karl, in a sense, is another name on that short list of HOFers of Spurs family. Congrats Coach Karl on your achivements that earned your induction. The Baseline Bums, whom he gave a shout out to, as well as Spurs fans dating back to the ABA days, salute you! GSG!!!
Manu’s speech was great… can tell retirement is doing him well.
Is it just me or does his one kid look like a mini RC?
Great player, great teammate, NBA champ, Olympic Champion and lots of other awards. If there was ever a player who personified grit, and a passion for the game, it was Manu. No question, he deserved the award. Thank you Manu for representing the spurs with such class and dignity. Well done!
- Interesting that his comments about Parker, unlike those of Duncan and Popovich, were not about his caliber or character/personality, but about role.
- Obviously an oversight, but he left out Mills when mentioning Splitter and Diaw.
- Off the top, how are Rodman, B. Wallace and "Run TMC" in the HOF, but Grant, Billups and Marion aren't?
He's obviously sick. He's battled cancer in the past, maybe it's returned.
Gasol isn't eligible until '25. Basketball Hall of Fame - Which NBA players are next in the class of 2023 and beyond? (espn.com)
He did mention "Patty" but he slips it in really quickly right at the very beginning of that segment.
Sorry I didn't mean to sound insensitive about Karl...cancer took both my parents. Just hard seeing him in that state when he was so lively on the sidelines as a coach.
Upon further review, you're right. I don't know how I missed that.
No worries.
Great ceremony... it's unfortunate it's going to be a long, long time until we have another first ballot HOF player inducted, tbh...
Parker.
Also Leonard, LMA and DDR.
Man, we have been quite blessed with great players. Gervin, Robinson, Duncan, Manu, Tony Parker. Just absolutely love basketball and how it brings out the uniqueness of every player. Hope the uniqueness never stops - Manu will always be one of a kind. I did notice he did not mention Kawhi, or Stephen Jackson. And his comments about Parker - about never letting ego get in the way - I wonder how many of those conversations happened during their career, and hopefully this does not turn into a Last Dance situation where we did not know things were going on during what a great and marvelous run. In Manu, the uniqueness and greatness of the sport is truly shown. Felicidades, y gracias Manu!
Was Timmy wearing the same suit he wore for his own induction ? That would straight up Tim Duncan move. Millionaire owning one suit when a suit is absolutely required.
The only Last Dance stuff the Spurs have dealt with is from disgruntled role players such as Horry, Jax and also Kawhi granted he's not a role player. I doubt anybody else was miserable playing for the Spurs during the Duncan era. If they were stories would have come out about it by now. There is reason why there is no books written about the Spurs dynastic run because it contained little to no drama.
TP has always been Manu’s ally. He mentioned this in his retirement speech, being the one who truly believed in him, of what he could do, Timmy doubtful of another unheard of guy, Pop trying to change Manu’s style. But TP I imagine always encouraging him, do what he does. In retrospect, TP was very mature at his age, very tough to break at 19, 20 years of age, with Pop barking at him at every opportunity. It was always mentioned as a joke, but it must have been real tough for TP, an international player at a very young age, playing the helm of a championship team as a PG, all that responsibility and not breaking.
Really the planets aligned when Spurs drafted Timmy, Manu, TP and coached by a no-nonsense great Coach Pop. Brent said it the best. Timmy will always be bereaved as the greatest Spur, while Manu is the most beloved. But additionally, Tony unbreakable toughness to win it all. Truly Spurs fans were spoiled to have had those 4 (including Pop) peaked together in San Antonio.
Each of those goes in under a different team, or at least (will have) played more seasons with another team.
Neph goes in as a Clipper, nor would I accept him as a Spur. DDR as a Raptor. LMA, while I'd love him as a Spur, he spent more time and probably had his best YEARS as a Blazer. He had a great couple of years as a Spur but had 3 or more seasons in Portland.
And to the folks with the laughing emoji on Nono's post, it's quite clear he means after the Big 3 are in...
Hey man! He got it dry cleaned!
I just saw highlights but did Tim even introduce him?
I don’t think they ever do, more like accompany them up the stage, or more like “formally” escort them in in the HOF.
Messi admitting he has never been the Alpha of his teams tbh.............
I thought Tim would at least introduce him with a few words, but all I saw on the videos of NBA.com was him walking with Manu to the dais and then sitting there while Manu spoke. I thought I heard one shout out of GINOOBILLLLLI! that might have been Barkley.
They don't allow other people to speak besides the inductee. It's been this way for years.
Manu forgot to mention Ime Udoka and Ime was in the audience.
