Can somebody please help me with San Antonio needs three arenas? Why not consolidate into one and demolish the others? I'm new to the city so just trying to figure out how a city can support 3 arenas?

I used to come here frequently for conferences pertaining to my job and even then I would be like, man they have a lot of arenas here but no sports teams to support?

Is there something wrong with the current arena the Spurs play in? Also, is ownership situation now stable or is it still up in air? Thanks
the current arena is in the worst part of the city.Whether its now or in ten years,The arena needs to be in a better area.It makes no
sense for the spurs or the city to keep playing in that arena for the future.Just get it over with and fix our past mistake and bring the spurs
    back downtown.

A quick distinction: the current arena is actually a Bexar County facility and the new arena would probably be a city of San Antonio facility. It's not impossible to think the county would continue to maintain the current arena since the rodeo would still be a main tenant. It would be interesting to see whom they would get to manage the place in apparent compe ion with the new arena.

For your lips to Gods ears.

The Alamodome was also a mistake (the thought SA ever had a chance at an NFL franchise with Dallas up the road, lol), but at least it has drawn NCAA interest in recent years.

The SBC center’s location was always absolute trash, and should have never happened. Cheap bas s.

I was living in Austin at that time when they voted for the SBC center on the eastside but I remember there was a lot of talk about revitalizing that area around the arena. That revitalization talk turned out to be bull .

I think there were two votes in Bexar county and the firs arena vote failed.

The city was trying to shoehorn an expansion to the convention center in with gifting the Spurs an arena and the Spurs were scared that vote would fail because of it so they went with the county's plan.

I'll vote for it. But before the election for the Alamodome, the city put out drawings of two awesome avant garde futuristic looking multi-purpose stadiums to be built. After the election we got that POS Alamodome that was not multipurpose. So, I hope if we build a new stadium it's not some low rent San Antonio special designed by same lame ass SA architects. We really need a state of the art facility. Would love bringing in Dell or Musk as partners.
Ideally Musk is on Mars sooner than later

Musk will make everyone sign an NDA, and then claim credit for building the Spur previous championship teams.

that never caught on. Texas Monthly called it a landlocked cruise ship. I agree it's a pretty uninspired exterior but it is a decent place to watch football.

$3B to $4B is a damn lot of money. For reference, the new Clippers arena costs $2B.

Yeah it's more than just an arena, but all this secrecy is stupid and will only make citizens su ious. It seems fairly likely that, after they got the federal courthouse and the ITC to move out, the city will try to clean house by getting the SSA, the Mexican Ins ute and the Universidad to leave as well. Then they could bulldoze everything except the tower and have a clean slate from I-35 all the way to Hemisfair Blvd. There will be plenty of room to place an arena, expand the convention center and build all kinds of other crap like housing, retail and hotels around them, maybe even a new Missions stadium. I bet there's even a plan to extend the extension of the Riverwalk. Then put in an even bigger pedestrian bridge (or some idiotic Elon Musk transport like Vegas) connecting the whole schmear to the Alamodome.

That's how you get a $4 billion price tag. It's going to be a series of glorious civic fights over the next decade.

The “secrecy” framing by the press is dumb. I have no doubt some of the NDA stuff is standard industry practice in a world of many compe ors vying for a piece of the action (engineering firms, architects, etc).

I do agree that the Spurs should get ahead of it and share more of their vision, sooner rather than later.

If they wanted the info to be embargoed, the city officials should not have put things on email that is subject to open records requests. That was stupid. That is public service 101.

CoSA gave the feds the site of the old Nueva St police HQ in a land swap. The new police and fire HQ is nearby on Santa Rosa.

I hear whispers of some sort of tunnel going under the freeway. They seem to be planning big. On a side note, how much of this is planning around the existing Alamo Dome. More specifically, is the dome one of the major obstacles, and if so is it because of...the stupid concessions deal with Red?

    Interesting.

Just drove west to east through Tennessee (lovely state btw). San Antonio could learn a lot from what Nashville did to revamp its downtown, otherwise it will fall behind like Memphis. The cities’ downtowns couldn’t be more different.

My guess is an attempt will be made to further integrate the dome as convention space, especially if it's too uggo for the NCAA to host Final Fours there. That seems like the best use for such a tunnel, probably with a tram or moving sidewalk. Under no cir stances should we let Elon build the tunnel. We'd end up with a useless Tesla parking lot like the Las Vegas Convention Center.

$3B-$4B is a -ton of money tbh. This is going to be a huge undertaking. They’re obviously planning on building an entirely new entertainment district downtown with that kind of money. New arena, new ballpark, shops and restaurants, an extension of the River Walk, etc. Probably even a Texas Live, as the amateur sketch shows. An underground tunnel would make a lot of sense, though not sure I buy it tbh. Either way, this going to take a while and the taxpayer is going to get ed hard. The finished product should be pretty dope though and infinitely better than playing on the -hole west side that we do right now.

Fun sketch. While it makes some sense to have everything in one place, the residents to the south might not want the noise from the baseball stadium. I have Fox Tech penciled in for that, but it looks like anything could happen at this point. Something has to be done to upgrade/replace the Missions stadium because it doesn't even meet AA requirements anymore.

What a waste to put a AA baseball stadium on prime downtown real estate. Build that in Castroville for all I care.
