"just play basketball and move the ball"
Thru 2 games i'm gonna say there is none.
If you see or know otherwise, please post.
"just play basketball and move the ball"
Game 3 vs that vaunted Clippers defense.
All ears.
Like you said, none.
via Mike FingerBut Johnson’s entry pass to Wembanyama in the final minute of regulation was a touchstone minute, because of the details. Gregg Popovich did not call that play. He allowed his guys to figure it out, and this is how they did it:
Ima call it the willy nilly offense.
Toronto.
Particularly down the stretch.
Defense remains the issue.
"give it to Zach and get the out the way"
Defense remains the problem.
We are 26th out of 30 teams in defensive rating.
We tend to overhelp a lot and give up open threes as a result.
And we don’t rebound we’ll to end possessions when they miss.
Its a work in progress…a lot was learned yesterday…
when wemby is fresh- the spurs get a 15-20 pt lead and wemby is otherworldy unicorn level
when wemby gets winded- he is human- and spurs fall apart…
the staff will figure out what works and learn from the losses…
I agree about defense. The team has no real ballstopping perimeter defender. Good guards will keep scorching us. Damn, would have been great to get a guy like Anthony Black.
Offense, the staff is introducing bits of offense like those cross-screens at the post, otherwise it's not too complicated yet and that's by design. Missing a go-to perimeter scorer, a bucket-getter, hurts. Needed Vassell.
Yeah, adding Wemby to a historically bad defense is not going to be the solution, and that's why I think priority #1 is pairing him with another top flight defender, preferably at SF so they can form a defensive tandem in the middle that is capable of covering both the paint and the three point line. Jonathan Isaac without the political baggage would be ideal in my opinion, but he's a particularly weird case. But that type of guy would be incredible next to Victor... and that's why, despite his hustle & passion, I don't think Keldon is a good long term fit.
wing defense is not really the issue. Point of attack and rim protection are. Wemby, Keldon and Devin provide enough offense. They need a hustle C who can rebound and block shots and a dynamic PG who at best case scenario is also a good defender. So basically 1 high level role player and 1 All-Star

Pop's offensive strategy is The SystemTM + basically see how good Wemby is/when and how hard he hits the rookie wall. Once we've got an idea of how great Wemby will be this season (pre trade deadline) I think we'll see moves based on that.
The basic foundation is likely assuming a bottom 10 finish/Tank again, unless Wemby has way better conditioning than the vast majority of rookies.
Those 74 (or whatever it was) second half points against Toronto were the killer last night.
How a team plays offense sets up how the transition Defense will be on many a trip down the court.
For those of you talking about defense, do you think there is any problem at all with the offense?
And btw, per the OP what is the Spurs offensive strategy?
From timvps game Grades:
Tre Jones
This was clearly Jones’ worst game of the season. It was a very un-Tre-Jones-esque night at the office. He called his own number too often, particularly in important situations. His passing wasn’t as crisp as usual and he was too sloppy with the ball. Jones also had trouble handling the ball against pressure and he was too often a liability on defense.
Grade: C-
The offensive strategy is still based on movement.
I think it is fine and is tough to defend but it requires continuity.
Wemby 6 shots thru 2 1/2 quarters vs Indiana.
Movement my ass.
We clearly need to run more plays for Wemby. I'm not worried about it yet
But is Wemby tired? He had a few bursts last night that looked "normal" on offense, but otherwise he was draggin' ass on that end IMHO. Bad shots, careless passes, his screens were a bit better but not great still.
Could be mental or physical - at this point, it's speculation at best for those on the outside of the org - but he definitely wasn't scoring 38+ again with his effort level on O.
His D was still really impactful, though. Makes me wonder if this is a trend to watch going forward. I'd say he's already an A+ NBA defender, but his offense has been about a C+ other than the historic game.
1st half vs Clippers.
What in the is the strategy?
Basically Trump's covid strategy tbh. do nothing, babble incoherently, watch a trainwreck unfold and hope it fixes itself
The team would be fine if it could learn to play defense. They play better defense in the YMCA.
