The Alligator-Filled Defensive Moat of Stephon Castle
The Alligator-Filled Defensive Moat of Stephon Castle
Still processing what the PATFO just put us through these past 24 hours. But looking at my final Big Board I had Castle at 3 and we grabbed him at 4 (so thats good...I guess). And as we SLOWLY collect championship pieces, he's definitely one of them. Welcome to SA!!!
That has to be one of the worst comps I've seen in a while, tbh.
DeRozan = midrange merchant wing that doesn't defend.
Castle = defensive minded guard that doesn't shoot middies.
*if he finds his jump shot
Narrator: It's highly unlikely his jumpshot will be located as this has been said 8472 times in a row and said jump shot failed to appear as if'ed
Now we have Cassle and Vassle
I kind of feel bad for Castle. He's caught in the crossfire of Spurs fans that are pissed off because of what happened with the number 8 pick.
I think he will be better than most of the other trash on this roster. He has enough upside to contribute going forward wherever this team decides ahead. Right now it looks like a team that just wants to keep trading draft picks for draft picks lol
A bizzaro world version that plays top notch defense, maybe.
but can't buy a midrange jumper to save his life
I felt let down because I have less to look forward to next season. 2025 draft is where things get real for the spurs. Make or break.
Good point. I am legitimately excited about Castle. Let's see if the FO can salvage the rest of this abortion of an offseason and put him in a place to make All Rookie team.
Castle initially will be the Jrue Holiday to Victor and Devin’s primary playmaking the same way Jrue played a fluid connector role with some hints of primary reps to Tatum and Brown’s playmaking as wings. They want to lean on Vic being the playmaker of the half court like a Luka and like LeBron.
As for Castle, he has more ball skills than he’s getting credit for and has more untapped ability there than he showed at UConn. Will he be a Ja? No. But he will use his athleticism in conjunction with his gears, and strength to still get to great spots for high percentage looks and passes out of the paint touch. It can be scaled as he develops further.
Excellent pick and versatile long modern PG who fits perfectly for the way the Spurs want to build around Vic.
The shot will come around and be in tune by the time it matters in 2-3 years.
The issue with his shot is inconsistent balance. When he’s straight up and down, it’s more consistent. When he fades and kicks his legs out is when inconsistency arises. Spurs are optimistic on the shot coming around quickly.
As for Dillingham, there was some stuff with his background that caused some pause. When they took Dilly in for a film session post workout like they do with every prospect, going over defensive possessions at Kentucky and possessions of the current personnel of the Spurs, he seemed lost about concepts and principles.
Fine, then draft someone else.
Well, at least we got Castle, presumably by accident.
Is it just me or does Castle look a little bow-legged?
Misleading thread le. Trebuchets can shoot.
How many guards have gotten their career highs against the Spurs in the last few years? That is over now, unless Pop does something stupid like bring Castle off the bench
I really want to be excited by this guy. I do. But smaller Sochan just does not move the needle for a team needing an offensive boost as well. If only we could have also gotten an offense-first microwave type guy at 8, but the 2030s are more important.
😂 well played
Love his defensive tools/tenacity . Can the spurs teach him to shoot?
Well, Castle's shooting form kinda looks like a trebuchet, tbh.
This guy was #2 on my big board, but if he follows a normal developmental trajectory most of this board is going to absolutely hate him these next 2 years. I'm mainly going to be looking to see that his defense translates (if it doesn't then his bust risk skyrockets) and see if he can develop his playmaking. If he maintains ~80% from the FT line that'd be great.
Years it took to become a league average shooter:
Jalen Suggs: season 3
Marcus Smart: season 5, if ever
Jrue Holiday: season 1
Dyson Daniels: TBD, going on season 3
Dejounte Murray: season 3 (still shooting <2 3PA/game)? 6? 7?
Castle getting #5 means the Spurs don't want to trade for Dejounte?
A rook (castle) in chess is traditionally worth 5 points. Coincidence?
