Castle isnt a good 3pt shooter. I remember people here whinning about our pg cant shoot 3's but now the like castle.
Even if he can't shoot, he's an upgrade over Tre.

Is it weird that I like the Castle pick way less after the Dillingham trade? I don't know if it's because this might guarantee that Castle will play PG rather than playing whatever positions his talent dictates, if the lack of additional players might signal that guys like Wesley and Branham again have zero accountability and will have a clear path to minutes or if it's because the suggests the Spurs may not have done legit due diligence on the prospects. It just doesn't sit right with me.
i still don't understand why would anyone draft castle, if not as a pg. if he's not defending pgs, there's really no value there. IMO we drafted the perfect fit defensively, as sochan and champagnie already can guard the perimeter extremely well. We needed someone for pgs that can switch on forwards well enough. We got that. The objective for this season, is to get a top 5 team in defensive rating.

Cross-matching is always a thing. A player does one thing on offense and another on defense. More specifically, guarding a player who is not guarding you. Regardless of what Castle is doing on offense, he will probably be covering the main perimeter threat, whether they're a PG or SG or even SF, depending on whether that might be Sochan's assignment.

i think that's the idea, but let's be real, he doesn't have the tools to guard the good sfs in the league. Sochan does fortunately.

No Ceilings absolutely loves Castle. And continue to say the question about whether he's a point guard makes little sense anymore. Of course Castle can play point, but one thing he was doing at UConn was increasingly playing off the ball. In the Huskies system he was dangerous all over the floor.

In terms of handle, it's much stronger than you'd think. In terms of passing, much stronger than you'd think. He's a lower usage point who is looking to be part of attacks from all over. Sets great screens for his size. Cuts very well. Understands how to slip, ghost screens, all the wrinkles a sophisticated offense will have. He'll not be a shot-focused or personal-focused player. He wants to move the ball around and crack defenses to pieces. It doesn't matter where he is.

Yeah, I don't get the Dillingham pass, but he's not in the vision of the team. I do think they want guys who can play multiple ways and see the game in different facets. Positional size is a major plus, which Castle has. He's brutally strong for his position. The little things he does, for a nineteen year-old. The knowledge and sense of the game and floor at his age is exceptional. He's going to play perimeter, often have the ball in his hand to get things started, but also play off-ball. That's the answer to position. On defense, he's going to get the main outside threat.

A longer video breakdown about what he can do on offense. 28:55 discusses his playmaking and passing, his assistrnover ratio. "Is Castle a point guard? Who cares." As in, the question is pointless. In a more hidebound scheme where a single player pounds the ball in isolation (Charlotte, Atlanta) he's not going to work nearly as well as in a UConn/Spurs team where the sets are designed to mix defenses up and force defenders to make decisions all over the place. Castle has the smarts to exploit these schemes and the PG chops to start whatever he needs to, plus the off-ball chops to run other actions.

this is why he will be leathal as the screener for Wemby. Inverted pick & rolls is where he will be most effective early on and from my guess we'll see a lot of those.

Even if he can't shoot, he's an upgrade over Tre.
Castle seems more confident and willing to take threes in bigger games -- that might be a good sign.

In the first four games of the NCAA tournament, Castle took only 8 three attempts and hit only one. 1 of 8.

In the last two (Final Four games), he took ten and hit three. Not great but better.

At least it indicates he's not scared of the moment.

The case for Castle is simple -- he's a winner, a skilled winner.

The template is the "Villanova guys" on the Knicks, winners. The Knicks continue to acquire those guys.

Perhaps basketball is a team sport and not just an amalgam of measurables.

One of the craziest things that Wemby showed last year was that he's a great passer.

If you've got a penetrating point guard who is also a big physical defender, that's a championship level unicorn.

Him and Wemby are going to be a terror for teams as they going to click together, and both have major basketball IQ so the Synergy between them is going to be fun to watch

The BBIQ part of this cannot be understated. He’ll quickly be one of our best players just based on that alone. Besides Tre and Wemby, the rest of our roster has a dearth of BB intelligence.

Early on I started picking up on the fact that Castle may be our BPA to draft. I wasn’t in and thought he was being overrated. As I studied up on him a bit I became increasingly excited about what he could do for us. The two man game with Clingan where he both threw and caught alley oop slams was a big seller with me. But, I also liked that he was more of a bully inside capable of punishing smaller guards with cuts, post ups, and lay ins. Playing in a high level program and sophisticated beautiful game type of system makes for a perfect fit. Then we consider that he is an absolute DAWG on defense and fills the only real gap that Sochan and Wemby leave in man to man D and I’m as happy with him as anyone we could have ended up with. I think he moves the needle for us much more than the 3 picks before him.

Watching the video of him shooting in the gym, it looked like he was just fooling around and not even trying because he has no lift on his jump shot. This wasn’t something I noticed before, so I went back and looked as his tape and sure enough, the few highlight tapes where he is actually shooting, he does kind of a tippy toe jump shot. I wonder if just some work on using his lower body on the shot will yield some immediate dividends.

Like, what's Castles semi realistic ceiling? If everything went well, his broken shot becomes good for example, without going into extremes. His defense is Smart level. What player do you think Castle becomes?

I say Jalen Williams, their ball skills, style and size are very similar, and Williams was also a non 3 point shooter his first two years in college
