It's terrible for the MAVS. Luka has been out ~ 22 games this season and they apparently didn't want to commit $345 million for 5 years to him when he doesn't eat well and doesn't keep himself in good condition. They appear to be worried that they will have committed all that money to him and think he's going to either be less productive than he should be or miss a lot of time because he's out of shape.
I don't think LA improved their chances of winning because AD is a very good rim protector and now their defense will be materially worse. But LA is thinking about 2 years from now when LeBron is retired and AD is 34 and has declined even more.
Even if he hasn't been in ideal condition, he took the MAVS to the Finals last year, has been in the top five in MVP voting five years in a row, and has been first team ALL NBA five of the six years he's been in the league and he's only 26 years old.
It'll never actually make sense, but that's what I read.
