Even if we get luck in the lottery, we are likely to have at least one pick in the 10-16 range in this next draft.
Now that we have Fox I can actually get excited about those picks because we don't NEED a star player from the draft as badly anymore.
We can start to look at quality role players in that range that fit glaring needs on this team.
Guys like Jalen Williams, Mark Williams, Tari Eason, Cason Wallace, Podziemski and Dereck have all be taken in the late lottery or mid first round in recent drafts.

Considering our roster, it seems obvious that we need to target 3&D Wings and a backup big.

What are people's thoughts on Bigs:
    • Khaman Maluach
    • Asa Newell
    • Derik Queen
    • Thomas Sorber

    Anyone else to consider?
I like Sorber more than I expected.

    What about Wings:
    • Collin Murray-Boyles
    • Liam McNeeley
    • Noa Essengue
    • Carter Bryant
    • Ian Jackson

    Anyone else to consider?
I really like McNeeley right now but not sure if he'll last until the late lottery.

Still draft best player available with both picks and work trades to fit the roster holes.

Agreed, unless both picks lead to two point guards, in which get the next player in line.

Bailey would be awesome here, but I'm not holding my breadth. My philosophy would be to continue to draft for the "3rd banana" until you get it right. Dev might be that guy once the pecking order settles, but it's just as likely that we cycle through him too. So, I'm looking at Baylor's Edgecomb or UT's Johnson with the ATL pick. Haven't done a deep dive but Asa looks interesting too if he can indeed space the floor.

And then I'm looking for size with rebounding. If we've looking at pick 10-12 with our natural one, I'm looking to Maluach. Would also consider trading the pick to accomplish the same goal.

Yeah Flagg or Bailey are the dream picks to play forward for us.
Obviously Flagg goes #1 but you can argue that Bailey is actually a better fit for the Spurs roster with his shooting.

I don’t agree with BPA though.
I’d pass on another PG unless a truly unique talent falls to us.
We have Fox and Castle there already and hopefully CP3 returns.

Guys, I'm pretty sure Flagg and Bailey are not mid 1st round draft targets.

You make a trade with the superior drafted pg. You get the most value out of this draft.

In the prospect thread I'm on team Danny Wolf. He's a 7-footer (7'0", 250), has point guard like handles, can shoot the three, seems to have good instincts around the basket going to his left or right, and he's also played very well alongside other 7-footers; he played his first year at Yale before trasferring to UMich, which I woud hope translates into some BBIQ. While I try to view him through the lens of positionless basketball (he could be a poster child for this), in a traditional sense I think he could thrive at PF and be procuctive at C if needed.

Turnovers are prbably the biggest negative, and based upon some box score sampling, he tends to disappear at times (anecdotal, small sample size, and all that, but the guard play at UMich looks a little ball-hoggy).

He's currently projected as a late first rounder, but with his size and skills I think he moves up into top 20, and could go a lot higher if he shines these during the next several weeks.

Rasheer Fleming is someone I would add as a potential mid first rounder or trade down. He’s someone I view as a Barnes replacement/understudy but would have synergy with Wemby on finishing plays.

Also, Rasheer Fleming was brought to my attention in the other thread and I'm definitely keeping my eye on him. 6'9', 240 and looking like a baby Karl Malone, and has demonstrated 3-point skills.

Bailey would be perfect. Flagg odds will be really low. Bailey maybe better than a 1 in 4 chance if Atlanta falls ahead of a couple more teams.

Don't want Paul back. He's going to want minutes and his game about to fall off with age. Time to play the young guys.

Agree on Fleming. I think there's also a chance to find a good back up center in the 2nd round

One factor to consider -- Rasheer Fleming is a good 2+ years older than most of the others guys being discussed (although I feel kinda queasy when I'm parroting the ecstatic line).

We're picking #1 and #30... what's the need to scout mid round targets?

Hopefully with Fox and a free agent acquisition, the any picks that the Spurs make this year will not be counted on to start, but gradually develop on the bench. You can't ever go wrong with wings and I outlined quite a few of them in the past, but I'm personally a sucker for weird or "rare" players regardless of fit. I don't really like drafting for need in the lottery or even mid-first and would be looking for high level contributors 4-5 years from now. With that said:

Collin Murray-Boyles - start him at backup small ball center initially as he has the strength and size to do so. I strongly believe based on his hands, midrange/floater touch that he will become a respectable shooter over time, and if he does he becomes an elite two-way role player ala Millsap with the ability to punish mismatches and self-create offense. Ok rim protector, but plays Draymond/Bam style defense in the sense that he does his work early. Can actually create his own shot, best in class hand-eye coordination, great passer, great combination of strength and athleticism. High level production scaled to age + high level movement scaled to position = valuable future contributor. Defensively, the most scheme-versatile big in this entire class, and maybe of the last several years.

    OR

Maluach - unique intersection of height, high level movement for size, touch, untapped potential, and youth. Plenty of 7 footers in college, but the ones with touch can't defend and the ones who can defend have poor touch. Also people underestimate how big the difference is between a 9'1" standing reach of a "good" rim protector like IHart and a 9'8" standing reach of a guy like Maluach.

    Bart query: Fresh/soph 7 foot+, 5 BLK%, 10 OREB%, >75% FT, high major since 2008:
    1. Brook Lopez (age 20)
    2. Solomon Alabi (age 21)
    3. Khaman Maluach (age 18)

Maluach also took a relatively high volume of 3s before Duke. Similar to Embiid, he started with soccer and didn't get started until he was 13, suggesting significant untapped development. At minimum you have a solid backup big, huge drop defender, and highly efficient roll man like bigger Capela. Where it gets very interesting is the upside tail - if the touch continues to develop and you have something in between Brook Lopez and Porzingis, who can be absolutely nuts next to Wemby.

    Bonus - Second round:

If Chris Paul leaves in the offseason, I'm taking a flyer on Braden Smith. I want the Fox-Castle backcourt starting next year for sure and will need a playmaker in the backcourt to make Sochan, Champagnie, and any backup center a viable offensive option. I also don't want to spend 4 years developing a raw point guard or spend 8 million on a Tre Jones. Smith is short, old, and awesome at basketball. Career 40% shooter from 3 and 84% from the line, >40 AST% and 3:1 AST:TO, 6'5" wingspan suggests not a complete liability defensively. Decent bet to be Tyus Jones, which would be a pretty good outcome for a mid second rounder.

SpursBills, speaking of short, old and awesome at basketball second round PGs... what are your thoughts on RJ Davis? He was the best player on the floor when I watched UNC at the Maui Invitational, but it seemed it was likely the result of that "I'm an upperclassman and I am just more developed than you" sort of thing (for the record, I kind of felt the same when I was watching Alex Karaban).

Haven't watched UNC games at all, but just doing spreadsheet scouting, the numbers suggest he is not an NBA prospect. Super senior with a 4.4 BPM, < 2 STL% on a 6 foot shorty with neutral to slightly positive wingspan = I'm out
