Can you use a regular CD-R recordable disk to record using a DVD Recorder?
Yes you can. DVD-R is the most DVD compliant recordable media.
The compatibility of your recording will depend on the media (disc) quality (don't buy cheap media) and how well is the authoring done in the dvd recorder. According to my experience the one that work best are: 1. Pioneer, 2. Sony, 3. Philips (bare in mind I am talking about their PAL (European) models).
You can use the DVD recorder to record CD-R, CD-RW, or other CD formats if your DVD recorder is specifically made to write to these different formats. Not all DVD recorders can do this. Check your insrtuctions or if you're going to buy one, ask the people at the store and check the box to make sure it's say's it can write to CD type media. You will not be able to make one to one copies to CD media from other DVDs. That will still require DVD media. If you are buying one post it's name and model here and one of us can take a look if you are unsure.

OOOOPS I just noticed you were asking about CD-R (and not DVD-R)!!!!
Please disreguard my info since it was aimed at DVD-R. CD-R recording is a specific function of the recorder and I have not seen many that can do it.

I'm still trying to figure out what the is the difference between dvd-rw and dvd+rw...
when buying, do the internet research, and know your needs and your potential machines capabilities....
from what little i've seen the + and - are different standards adopted by the electronics manufacturers. Initially dvd writers would more than likely write to one or the other...more recent writers have no problem with either media. Your manual should have the relevant info on this.
The - format was more widely compatible to older units than + was. + tends to burn faster as there is a smaller finalization process.
Both types of media are now nearly universally accepted by DVD players. For those who want to know more (and a good way to investigate if your DVD player will play those "downloaded" movies) is to visit DVDRHelp.com. You can also find tutorials on how to back up your own DVD's and such.

The best DVDs I've seen playing burned media are progressive scan DVD players. Older players seem to have problems, but the site Johnny referenced is a good one.
All DVD burners can burn CD-Rs, but you can't burn anything more than 700 MB to them.

AHF, not all DVD burners can burn CD-R. Most of the new ones can. Taco just has to check the box and he'll be alright.

it's a philips....i saw a couple in the sunday paper for cheap as well....but i think 200 is the cheapest i've seen...and you know what they say about getting what you pay for....do your research...

I've been seeing some damn good deals on PC DVD writers lately, especially with dual-layer drives hitting the market. Good models starting below $200 and hovering around $100+.
I had it done!! ( old family movies that were converted from 8 MM to VHS )
I used a DVD-R and my cousin has a DVD Recorder.
It came out fine!!!
