Spurs Sign Linton Johnson III
SAN ANTONIO The San Antonio Spurs today announced that they have signed forward Linton Johnson III. Per club policy terms of the contract were not released.
The 6-8, 205-pound Johnson spent a majority of the 2003-04 campaign with the Chicago Bulls. For the season he appeared in 41 games for Chicago with 20 starts averaging 4.2 points and 4.5 rebounds in 17.9 minutes per contest. Johnson first signed with the Bulls on September 29, 2003. He appeared in 18 games with Chicago before being waived on January 6. On January 9, Johnson signed with the Rockford Lightning in the CBA where he averaged 15.6 points and 8.5 rebounds in 21 games. He then re-joined the Bulls on February 28 - signing a 10-day contract with the team - and spent remainder of the season with Chicago.
Johnson played four seasons at Tulane University averaging 6.7 points and 4.9 rebounds in 107 career games. He went unpicked in the 2002 NBA Draft after averaging 9.0 points and 6.5 boards as a senior during the 2001-02 season.
Blocked at least one shot in about half his games. Always a plus.

Guys, this is not a "big" or pivot player. He's a 6'-8" swingman. It does not preclude the Spurs from signing Malone or any other "big" to a veteran minimum contract.
He's more of a defensive player with size to guard the perimeter. He ranked #18 in the NBA in Steals Per 48 Minutes(2.42).

Good pick up -- he fills the role of that long 3.
This is a very good signing. We saw him play Rocky Mountain Revue and I told Kori many times that he'd be the perfect long three for the Spurs. He's an awesome defender, very wiry and has a great at ude (he was the Chicago team captain and was helping the young peeps on the team). His shot is erratic but I saw him working on it.
As far as long threes go, this was the guy I wanted. He'll be buried on the bench but he'll be useful when you need a guy to defend against the Odoms and Nowitzkis.
