Damn that was good. I feel like I need a cigarette. Winning the season opener = good. Winning the season opener against a division rival = good. Winning the season opener against a dangerous team that will be a conference threat = better. Winning the opening game against the ass Mavs = BEST.

Elson changed everything. The game tonight was in no way similar to the playoff series. The reason is Elson. The Spurs could go big and play a center. Duncan could guard the center while Elson was effective with Dirk. Bowen could guard Josh (Josh's 20 points scored while being guarded by Bowen is just HUGE). The game was the slow type of game the Spurs want. It is all about Elson. It's almost like having David Robinson again... (not really, but some similarities).

That is why I said the Spurs are back. The Spurs are scary. Dallas is incredibly good and that is why it was a close game. If Dallas hadn't started the fourth quarter going 5 minutes with no points until Diop scored, then Dallas would have won despite just how good the Spurs are now.

taken from the Mavs board regarding tonights game

Forget TD, they are just as concerned with Elson

Hospitalized with stomach pains ... in other words, he knew the Mavs were going to lose and didn't want to be there to see it in person.

AWWW, poor baby. But damn....Mavs are so deep, it's sick. Devean George, Stackhouse, Croshure, Harris.....their bench is looking nice.

Stackhouse is championship cancer. I have no doubts that the closer Dallas gets to winning something, the more likely he is to personally screw it up.

Yeah Bonner Williams will be key

If WIlliams can get healthy, that will help out in bundles.

If Williams can guard and rebound like he did in New Jersey a couple years ago, the Spurs bench then becomes better.

    Prob matchups.

His defense is horrible, Finley's is better.

    That simple.

The game had other made-for-TV moments:

-- Official Jess Kersey was KO'd with a split chin before halftime when a blocked shot bounced hard off the whistle still in his mouth.

-- Mavs owner Mark Cuban said before the game he'd be on his best behavior per the commissioner's orders -- and he sort of stuck to it.

-- Howard was called for a flagrant foul, and new San Antonio forward Francisco Elson's screaming fit after a dunk drew a technical.

    Congrats Spurs.

Duncan just 13 pts but had a double-double and erased an early sluggish performance with a rebound and putback with 50.4 seconds left

Don;t know how his D was.

But damn, 8 points 5 assists and no turnovers.

    FANTASTIC opening night.

Keep bringing that Beno, make me forget Detroit in 05.

What I liked in the 2nd half was the defensive intensity the Spurs displayed with several combinations.

The starters go on a 7-0 run to draw within 3.
Elson, Timmy and Horry played excellent D and the Spurs did no go small in the 4th.
Gino made a 3 or 4 huge plays defensively in crunch time.
Parker gutted it out and even did his best Curley Neal/Marcus Haynes/Isaiah Thomas dribbling impression.
Bowen made some of the clutchest shots (clutchest works here).
    Good moves by Pop.

...and Dallas missed some of the ones they made in the first half.

    Good win.

Now what i want pop to try and do is, play elson more at the 3, he could be the perfect bowen replacement instead of james white who we mite sign. then we can just worry about replacing a sg and c in the future.

real test is tommarow elson can he d lebron....chuck bowen on hughes

    easy win, next!

First, Elson is a beast (for at least this game...wow)

Second, Dirk's 3rd and 5th fouls were complete and utter bull .

Third, that technical on Elson for the dunk-scream was one of the worst Ts I have ever seen.

All around....best game I have seen this year so far.
